Open With

About two weeks ago, I've been having a window box pop up everytime I try to open something asking what do I want to open it with, the "Open With" box. I've browsed and searched and tried things to open the internet explorer and PC games, but it never really worked. I managed to work my way around it and get onto the internet, but I haven't been able to open up game programs.
I recently fixed some of the programs that opened the "Open With" box, but there still remains problems with opening folders.
To go more into detail, I'm trying to download the Mutliplayer Server for MineCraft; I save the file, run it, then the open with box pops up and I can't open the MineCraft Folder.
I have looked online for similar problems and see what those people did to stop the "Open With" box from appearing. Nothing worked, no matter how many reboots and default programs I downloaded.
How can I get rid of the "Open With" box ever again? Or rather, how can I set all programs to open with their corresponding opening program? It's annoying, and I'm not tech savey.

Please and Thank You.

Re: Open With

I've seen this caused by malware - but not all the time. Do you remember doing anything that may have caused this?

In general, the computer has no idea on how to open anything. Here's a simple .bat file that may help.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip

Download the .zip file - extract the .bat file to your desktop - double click on the .bat file. Hopefully, as long as the .bat file associations didn't get messed up - it should open up command prompt and run some commands.

See if that helps,

Re: Open With

About a month ago, everything was running slow, even with one program going. I thought to myself what could be causing it, and I remembered something a friend told me: In the Windows Task Manager, under the processess tab, there will be a long list where some might say "00 C." or even up to "99 C." I was told that could cause framerate and latency issues along with slower programs. So I looked for the highest one, and I'm pretty sure the type I deleted was a .exe, or maybe a System.
Around a few days later, the Open With started to happen, so I'm guessing that did it.
I hope there's a file/download to fix my irrational act out of frustration...
I saved the .zip file, extracted and put it on my desktop, ran it, and tried to run the PC game program from before, and the Open With box still appeared.
As for malware, not too sure what it is or how to fix the Open With problem it's causing.
