Odd problem with US International keyboard layout

Hey guys, I've had this problem for a long time now and even though I got a bit used to it, it's still very, very annoying... I couldn't find anything similar on Google, forums, etc, so I really hope someone here can help me.
I'm using the US International keyboard layout, but it doubles all things which you use to type accents, like an apostrophe, or ". This means that when I type an apostrophe, then hit space, then type an e, I get: 'á. This should be just 'a of course. Now I have to backspace everytime and type the a again, you can probably see why this would annoy me. Also, same thing: if I type ", then space, then for example an r, I get: ""r.
I absolutely have no clue what could cause this problem. Any help would be highly appreciated!

I have a similar problem. I must have accidentally changed a keyboard setting before turning off my computer and now when I enter my windows password to boot up windows, I can't. I have a ~ in my password, but I only get the double `` when I hit shift+` instead of a ~. ....at least I think it is a `` because it only shows two dots for a password. Help anyone?!

Maybe something has gone corrupt with the keyboard layout. Why don't you change the keyboard layout to regular US english, reboot, change it back to US international, reboot and then try again?

I have the same problem. It's even a bit more serious for those of us who use a language in which we actually need to type accents.

I have three languages set up in Vista: English (US), Dutch (NL) and Portuguese (BR). All have the keyboard 'US International' attached. What should happen in US International, is that typing an accent and then a letter, is for them to join together. So ~ and a becomes ĂŁ, and ' with a space becomes a generic accent (as used in: I'll). But what is does now, is make ~~a or I''ll. As the original poster said, it simply doubles the character, which of course is good for nothing.

It seems to be a bug, unrelated to the language or keyboard settings. It just shows the problem in whatever language I have my Windows keyboard settings when I boot it. If it is English, than English is unusable for the entire session. I need to switch to Dutch or Portuguese, and the US International keyboard works fine. If I boot my computer with the keyboard settings set to Portuguese, then I need to switch to Dutch or English to get a proper US International keyboard.

Seems like this bug didn't exist until Vista SP2.

In any case, for you a temporary trick could be to install more than one language (e.g. English (US) and English (Trinidad, or maybe even GB)). After booting, use the language bar to switch for one language to the other, and the US International keyboard works fine. Until you reboot, of course, then you switch to the other language.

Also, please remember that - confusingly - you can find your keyboard settings in both Vista and XP not under 'keyboard', where you would expect them, but under 'Regional and Language Options' in the Control Panel.

Let's hope Microsoft fixes this shortly!
