Hi there.

I have had files slowly go missing or become corrupt. All my 2012 photos folder GONE! My 2011 photos are half gone. Each day more are going missing.
Other files are there but in an unrecognizable format eg: microsoft word file that I could previously open is now unreadable.

I have AVG Internet Security installed and it hasn't picked up any bugs.

I have got a Hijack this reading for you:

Corruption of files or otherwise inexplicable loss of files is more usually caused by a failing hard drive, in which case you need to test the drive before submitting a post for a malware check. You can test the drive with Seagate SeaTools for DOS from here: | Seagate
(SeaTools can be used to test any brand of hard drive).

The download is an ISO file from which you must create a CD using Nero or the free IMGBurn from here: Download ImgBurn 2.5.7.0 - FileHippo.com

When you've made the CD, boot your PC from it & the SeaTools interface will appear.
Select your computer's internal hard drive and run the long or extended test on it.

If the drive passes the test okay, then you need to post your HJT log on the malware forum if you suspect malware infection - we are not allowed to analyse HJT logs on the Windows forums.

If the files which keep disappearing are/were on a secondary or external drive, you can install SeaTools for Windows and use that to test the drive instead. SeaTools for Windows can be downloaded from the same page as SeaTools for DOS which I provided a link for above.

If the short test fails, the long test will surely fail. Backup whatever you can and replace the HDD.

Download Ubuntu Live CD ISO image and burn the ISO image to a cd using Imgburn (how to burn an ISO image using Imgburn). With the newly burned cd boot with it then select "Try Ubuntu" not "Install Ubuntu" access the Windows partition or what ever partition or hdd you which to backup files from by going to "Places". Backup the files to DVD, an external hard drive or thumb drive(s).

This method is used if you can not access Windows. If you can then backup your important files through Windows to DVD's, thumb drives or an external drive.
