Mapped Drive over VPN tunnel

I'm working on mapping drives between two networks over an established VPN tunnel.
At one location the device is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and at the other remote location, the device is running Windows XP Service Pack 3.
When I try to map a drive on the XP over the network I can access the Windows 2k SP4 root drive by typing the IP address into the run prompt from the Start Menu. When I try to access any of the shared folders devices, the windows explorer window stops responding and I have to close it.
On the other side, on the Windows 2k SP 4, when I try to access the Windows XP SP3 by typing the IP address of the remote device in the Run prompt from the start menu, I get a warning that states "The network path was not found."
These two devices can ping each other using the different private subetted IP addresses and Remote access is working.
Any suggestions or help?
