keyboard not working in XP; fine in Linux

Hi,

I've got a strange problem and can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

I have an old Dell desktop PC with two hard drives. I'm running Windows on one and Linux on the other. I'm using a PS2 keyboard and mouse, which both work perfectly during startup and in Ubuntu. However, when I load XP, the keyboard doesn't work.

It started about a week ago. I boot to XP and the mouse works fine, but as soon as I press a key on the keyboard everything freezes. It's the same in Safe Mode. I haven't made any changes to the system recently.

I've tried another PS2 keyboard and a USB keyboard, but the same thing happens.

I've looked at the BIOS but there was nothing about keyboards there except the option to have Num Lock on when starting up.

I've looked at Device Manager, but Keyboard isn't even on the list. Not even in hidden devices.

I have a horrible feeling that something is wrong in the Registry, about which I know nothing...

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be really grateful.

Thanks,
Sorcha
