Internet Browsers not working

I have a Dell machine with XP windows loaded. I connect to internet via AOL version 9 and I have IE8 installed. Suddenly I am unable to start up either my AOL browser properly or IE8. I have reinstalled XP, IE8 and run virus scans but nothing indicates a problem. When I start up AOL browser the browser opens but it does not display website although at the bottom it says website found, connecting. Sometimes the screen will just disappear. When I try IE8 it connects to the website for about 5 seconds before I get the standard "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and has to close" My event view shows "faulting application error ieexplorer.exe version 8". Not sure what to do next as I have tried reinstalling everything and tried the non ads in IE without any success and tried the reset option too.
Any suggestions? thanks
