If MBR is corrupt, when will boot fail?

If a computer has a corrupted Master Boot Record, at what exact point doing bootup will the computer fail? When you see the Windows logo & moving line of dots? I have a computer that keeps reverting back to the System Recover Options menu (Vista) but it does this "late" in the startup. I suspect that if boot sector corruption exists, then the failure to boot should happen sooner in the startup process. True?

I did a bootrec.exe /fixmbr and bootrec.exe /fixboot but this hasn't fixed it. My next step is a repair install.
