How turn Off & On a LAN connection?

I want to be able to turn off or on a LAN connection, as needed. But I need to be able to access the internet any time. My old and new computers are networked together thru a Router, for the purpose of transferring files. I'd like to keep the two hooked up for a while.

A non family member lives in a basement apartment and I supply him an internet connection that feeds thru the same router. If he were inclined, he could probably look into my computer files during a time when both our computers are running.

Yesterday, I tried right clicking the network icon and selecting "disable." However, when I later needed to go online, my computer could not find its IP address. It had to be reset by the server.

What is the most practical way to handle this issue? thanks. Robt

When I later recheck or reactivate the Print & file shareing function, will that immediately restore the network function for the two computers?

Not sure why this would be an unusual request. Am I missing something?

Thanks.
