How to slow down a slide show?
Are there any free slide show software programs compatible with XP that allow for a timer to be set to indicate how long to wait before displaying the next picture?

MS PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress will do the trick.

They're designed for presentations and won't go to the next slide until you're ready.

Otherwise, Google is your friend.
