Step One - See what hardware your computer supports e.g IDE, SATA etc
Step Two - Take the side of your case, and see if there is any room for a hard drive - if you dont know what one looks like i suggest you dont do this yourself - get a professional
Step Three - Buy a suitable drive
Step Four - Take case side off, mount hard drive using screws where you want to put it.
Step Five - Make sure you connect power and the IDE/SATA cable. If you are using other devices on the same cable using IDE make sure you define which drives are master and slaves.
But seriously... if you dont know what a hard drive looks like you could do more damage than good trying to put a new one in
openflame06 is right. Get a knowledgeble relative, geeky friend or paid technician to assist you and work with them to learn. Not saying you couldn't do it yourself but if things don't go well, it's nice to have help or a shoulder to cry on.
You could just get an external hard disk. They're fairly cheap and do not require any installation other than simply plugging it in and possibly formatting it.
Yeah, if you can afford an external HDD, then I suggest you to buy it.
You can easily attached it and you can carry it wherever you go [you will have a large USB stick
+1 to all the recommendations on external hard drives, i didnt even think of that
