How do I turn off those annoying notification bubbles that pop up in the lower right hand corner of the screen from the system tray icons? They are driving me crazy.

THANKS!

Hello ckuzbek

Most of them are controlled by programs such as you antivirus, firewall etc.
The only one you can control is the Security Centre.

Some of them are also caused by malware, so we really need to know which messages you are referring to.

Dunedin,
Thanks for the reply. I think these are legitamite messages - not malware. The messages are typically notifications of software updates available (for Adobe, Java, etc.), or about how the computer cannot connect to some network drives (I haven't logged in yet), or that there are unused icons on my desktop, and on and on. The messages look like those talking bubble quote boxes that the MS Help assistant uses. The messages are "always on top" and I either have to click the 'X' to close them or click on the message to open the software. Can't I just choose to not have these notification messages show up?

There are scripts to turn them off, but they disable all balloon tips.
Try these and see if it is enough.

You can turn the ones for Updates off in msconfig and then check for Updates manually.
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to one of the links below. They will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. They will also identify any malware. Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup" Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

For the network connection,
Go to your network connection
Right click/Properties/General
there is an option to show/not to show this icon at the bottom

Unused icons on desktop
It`s the wizard telling you that

Right click Desktop/Properties/Desktop/Customise
Uncheck "Run Desktop Wizard every 60 days"

Any more?

Maybe this will help in a less permanent way. Right click in the area of system tray where they appear, choose Customize Notifications... , then you can set which ones you want to "Always hide", "Hide when inactive", or "Always show" by clicking beside the behavior listed and a drop down list of the three choices appears. Hope this wasn't too basic or elementary.
