Im new to the forum, so i'll start by saying HI to everyone! Ok, somewhere along the line, my services snap-in got screwy. when i go to the MMC, i get a "snap-in failed to initialize" error box when trying to open the services window. also, the shared folders window does the same. i can open all the oter ones, just not these 2. i tried to add a new snap-in but its a no-go. so i booted into safe mode and noticed that the icon for the services is the "unknown icon" in windows. has my services gone corrupt? can i just copy/paste the file from the wifes laptop? im very stumped on this one. PLEASE HELP!!!!

yes it did. it says "snap-in failed to initialize. " i get this same error with the shared folders too. error has a clsid number about 3 miles long. if you need the numbers, i can post them in a bit. can i google the number and possibly get more info about the error? thanks again! i'm trying to avoid a reformat, but i'm thinking about a repair installation. is this worth the effort?

One suggestion...

Try copying the services.msc file to a backup location and delete the copy in the system32 directory. First of all try going into it and see if it gets restored or errors. If it errors, try another SFC. If things go even further wrong, you can always restore the file from the backup you made.

Hope this helps!

A repair install means you won't lose any data so go ahead and do this.
ok, so i tried to do a repair install, but it tells me it couldnt find any hard drives to do it on. i think this is because my hdd's are sata. do i need to reload the drivers from the floppy that came with the motherboard? (sata drivers) i saw during the setup where windows loads a bunch of generic drivers it asked for third party scsi drivers. do i need to do this now, even though everything is working fine right now with my hard drives?
