My System

Mistake

hi!

i will try to explain my problem the best i can:

every 3-5 minutes or so, the main window that i'm working in (doesn't matter which program im running, but usually firefox/msn messenger, etc..) stops being the "top" window, and instead goes to the background - as if i opened another internet explorer window on top of it.

this "glitch" is always followed by something even more strange - the sound gets cut off, and if i check the meters in volume control i always find the "wave" meter to be on minimum, and i have to put it back in the middle.

WHAT THE HELL???

can you please help?

Do you have a wireless mouse ?

When I see this, it's because the wireless mouse battery is failing, and the mouse turns on & off, so the cursor jumps around.

Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

Click "show all hidden devices".

Any of your devices yellow or red flagged ?

yes!

under "non plug-and-play drivers" - a device called "serial" , it's marked with a yellow exclamation point.

yellow-flagged "serial" device is very common and not the cause of your problems. Uninstall the serial and then click "search for new hardware" in device manager. I think it's the serial port on the motherboard (never used) and can be disabled in BIOS. Did you click "show hidden devices" ? If yes, and there are no other flagged devices then that is all you can do as far as devices and their drivers are concerned.

Given that we can't blame a device and/or driver, I'm inclined to think you are infected.

What is your AV software ? Are your virus definitions fully-updated ? Is your Windows fully updated ? Do you do p2p filesharing ? Have you been infected recently ?

Run an online scan from Trendmicro's Housecall to make certain you are malware-free.

Run chkdsk.

Navigate Start>Run>(type)"msconfig" and turn off all non-MS Services and all startups and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you can assume that the problem is with something that you have turned off in Selective Startup.
