You could try a system restore.

What type of file did you set to open with paint?

A virus? Well, that changes everything. They usually want you to follow some steps in these sort of situations, so here's the link:

open My Computer. go to tools/folder options

Click on the file types tab, here you can manually edit everything about file extensions. When you find the one you want highlight it and click advanced, and you can choose the program it opens with by selecting the action "open", hitting change or edit and browsing for the program .exe file.

Now doing this manually for everything you use will be a pain in the bottom but i'm not quite certain if there is a way you can get it all to default again. Maybe reinstalling where necessary?

"You can download a BAT file (zipped) that will restore all of the "default" associations that XP ships with. It will not restore those file associations created by 3rd party applications. The BAT file can be downloaded HERE"

You can simply reinstall Windows xp, that won't erase your files or data.

Most likely, yes. I'd say there's about a 98% chance that it'll work.

Do you have a Windows XP CD?

Nothing is 100% guaranteed. There's "always" a chance that your computer will go on the fritz and crash. In other words, yes, it would be best to back up your data.

Hold on a sec, "can" you back up your data with all the problems that you're having?
