A friend, who is new to computers, came by with an old Compaq Presario Notebook (running Vista) to have me take a look at it and maybe install some software. We decided it might be fun to load up with Ubuntu. I have successfully loaded Ubuntu on other machines before.
So we decided to do a full install- getting rid of Vista completely. Unfortunately the system wouldn't let me load it - it simply hangs 90% through the Ubuntu install. I tried it multiple times using different install CDs- and it hung in same place each time. Of course in the process, Vista was wiped off the machine.
Unable to load Ubuntu, I decided to switch gears and install Window XP (I have an old MS Student version that has never been "activated"). It seemed as if the install is going along fine, until it too finally hangs- saying I don't have a hard drive, or the system can't find the hard drive. I was able to run the system diagnostics on the machine and of course it shows there is NO issues with the hard drive whatsoever.
Now my friend really needs his computer running, and i feel terrible that I screwed it up. If anyone out there knows what the heck might be going on, I can avoid digging up money out of my own pocket to bring it in to a shop to diagnose.
Some notes:
- System is Presario c700 notebook - bios version F.07 1.46 1024mb ram
- Vista was running just fine on it yesterday - no apparent issues except the fan runs continuously
- My friend belongs to a motorcycle club so I REALLY don't want to piss him off
Please help!
