epson scanner not recognized

Recently restored HD; installed software for Epson Perfection 3590 scanner. Windows said "new hardware installed" but when trying to open scanner, windows says "scanner not recognized."

Have uninstalled and reinstalled scanner software numerous times, after updating driver (currently, version 2.7.0), changing usb ports, etc. Have also done "clean install" from Epson support page. Always disabled security programs and firewall before install.

Under device manager, scanner icon appears but with no black checkmark such as appears under HP Jet printer (works fine as does iomega zip).

Have winxp home version 2002; 2 gb ram; emachine W4885, updated to service pack 2 after restore and other recommended updates. Under disk C, epson folder reads "epson 11693"; under control panel, scanners & cameras, nothing is listed. Under device manager, no hardware is shown for imaging devices; under usb controllers, show an "unknown device", details USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&747A81E&0&6 and under general, says "no drivers are installed for this device"; under driver, digital signer says "microsoft windows publisher" and "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device". When checking properties of other usb ports, all says "working properly."

I'm at my wit's end as I desperately need scanner for business purposes and don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?

Welcome to TSF
Have you went in to Epson and downloaded the twain drivers HERE?
Download and install these and see if it helps.

The black check mark on the printer indicates the default printer.

According to Epson, do not plug in the scanner first. Install your software first, then plug in the scanner and scan away.

I also found that the updated driver on the Epson website doesn't work for my Perfection 1670. I had to dig out the cd to install the original software.

Re: epson scanner not recognized

I'm having the same problem with my brand new Epson 500 and even though it's recognized in Windows XP itself, even the Epson scanner programs don't recognize the scanner and none of the graphic programs on my computer recognize it but if I go to the control panel under scanners I can run the darn thing from there. I've updated all the drivers but this is crazy. Any suggestions?

Re: epson scanner not recognized
Had same problem with Epson Expression 1680. Followed advice on installing software first (contrary to instruction manual) then plugged in. It works great!

Re: epson scanner not recognized

Nothing helps. The eMachine is useless without a scanner.
