DVD-RW drives just won't work!

Greetings.

Recently I noticed that I could not read DVD discs in my DVD-RW drive. It would always read audio CDs. Sometimes it will read a data CD, sometimes it won't. It will not read anything from a DVD disc.

Now keep in mind, this is after booting into Win XP SP2.

In "My Computer" Win XP SP2 lists the drive as a DVD-RAM drive.

I can boot from any CD or DVD before Windows loads . . . with one minor exception:

The Windows Vista install DVD. The installer will load, but at a very very very sluggish pace. Eventually though I get an error about it not being able to find drivers for the disc drive.

However, an OpenSUSE 10.3 dvd install disc works just fine. (I did not get a chance to install openSUSE.)

This drive was a Lite-On. I swapped it out for a Sony DRU-840A. I am still unable to read DVDs, but can boot from them.

I have two IDE hard drives on one channel. I have the DVD-RW drive on the second channel. I swapped the channels and the drive still behaves the same.

I replaced the drive with old CD and DVD reader drives. Those drives work fine.

I have attached logs from Sony's DriveCheck program. This program was able to write a DVD, but not read it.

Any help or ideas on what might be happening would be greatly appreciated!
