OH, NO! Not again. Just went through the "Safe Mode", "HighjackThis" routine about 2 weeks ago. The gurus couldn't find a problem.

I must tell you that neither of my optical drives are working. On one it tells me to put a disk in. On the other it works (I get the hour glass),
but nothing seems to be happening, although I don't wait too long before clicking on something else to stop it.

BTW, The problem of not being able to delete those two files has been in affect every since my first post here.

 

Have you tried dragging them to the Recycle Bin?

 

No, I hadn't. Just tried it. Didn't work. Same message.

 

Go to c:\Documents and Settings>All Users>Desktop. If the icons are in there, try deleting.

 

Icons are not located at that place. (c:\Documents and Settings>All Users>Desktop)

 

I think the following worked for me once...its been a while since I've dealt with this annoying problem...

create a folder on your desktop...then drag the icons into that folder...

then delete the folder...

Since you been through Security, I'm hoping you still have HijackThis on your system, so let's trying using HJT to delete them

Open HijackThis and click on the Config... button at the bottom right. (Note: if HJT opens to the Welcome screen, click "Do a system scan only")

• Click the Misc Tools button
• Click the Delete a file on reboot button on the left
• Browse to the file and click Open
• HJT will prompt you to restart the computer - click Yes.

The computer will now reboot.

Repeat for the next file.

 

Thanks Glaswegian. Did as you suggested, and was able to delete the files.

Had to reverse the Config and Do a system scan only sequence, tho.

Your log is still clean, so I would suggest it must be something else. Hardware etc is not something I know very much about, so I'll leave you in the capable hands of other experts.

 

Well, I found that my DVD-RW drive does work. I was too impatient. It takes some time for it to come on screen.
Too much time. I know my home computer should be faster than my work one. It's not.

Not to show my ignorance again, but I thought you should be able to read from, and copy to, both optical drives. Best I can
tell, the DVD/CD-RW drive only wants to copy files. Someone want to give me a lesson in drives?

I loaded Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 tonight. At first I didn't think the 4th disc was even loading. The other 3 spun up
pretty fast. Couldn't even hear the 4th one loading. The hard drive (I assume) made more noise when it was decompressing
the files after finishing the download.

P.S. Any idea which program I should allow to run in ZoneAlarm for automatic Windows Updates? There is an "Automatic Update",
BUT what is it updating? There are two "Microsoft Windows..." programs also. Could one of these be the automatic update?
Is there a way to see if there is more information after the "..."? Tried right clicking, but that didn't work for me.
