Corrupted Registry file

Hello everyone

Here's a problem that has been bothering me for a few days now

It all started after a power failure. Windows (XP SP1) couldn't boot, because of a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA BSoD. It took me some time to locate the real problem. It was in the registry hive "system" (which can be found at Windows\system32\config). It seems that a small portion of the file has some critical corruption which is preventing all possible access. I tryed many registry-fix programs, but every single one fails (with the previously mentioned BSoD) when trying to access that portion of the file (even when I try to fix it on a third-party box!).
Only 1 program showed some progress - Registry Reanimator 1.02, showing some weird chars at a specific point, but not crashing (probably because it's DOS-based) and not fixing the hive (maybe because it was a demo, hm).

Any suggestion/idea is very welcome

Re: Corrupted Registry file

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Those third party registry cleaners will only make things worse.

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Last Known Good Configuration?

Re: Corrupted Registry file

Thnx for responding Geekgirl

Yes, I can boot into Safe Mode.
Choosing Last Known Good Configuration has no effect if trying to run in Normal Mode.

Also, I switched the System Restore off previously, so there's no point to restore too...

My current bet is that I should fix/remove the corrupted part of "system" registry file and simply put it back in Windows/system32/config
(btw. if I'm using the system file from Windows/repair everything works fine, but all settings are defaulted, which is kinda a problem...idea is just to save as much as possible from current system reg. file, since it's 99% OK)

Re: Corrupted Registry file

You might try a Perform a Repair Installation

Question:
Why did you not have SP2 installed?

Re: Corrupted Registry file

Already did and also got the same BSoD while performing the Repair Installation (which complicated things a bit, since then neither Normal or Safe mode worked - because setup removed some system files and if the WinXP install CD was booted again, it couldn't find any Windows installations (therefor offering only fresh new install))
But I fixed that one, hacking up some missing dll's

Answer:
Because I don't believe that it's any better. Maybe even a bit more resource consuming, but that's a bit OT here

Re: Corrupted Registry file

I hate the safe mode option. I just don't know what to do! I need to find out how to fix these corrupted registry files!

I may need to do what Geekgirl is saying.
