Computer freezes when shutting down

I have a Dell Computer running on Windows Xp. I have owned and operated for two years without problems. Approx. three weeks ago, the computer started freezing up and will not shut down. After a while, I have to unplug. Is this an Xp problem? Not very computer savy.

Re: Computer freezes when shutting down

In the last three weeks you say...

Riddle me this:

1) What have you installed?
2) What have you uninstalled?
3) What Firewall do you have?
4) What Anti-Virus do you have?
5) Last time you scanned for SpyWare?

Re: Computer freezes when shutting down

I have not installed any programs, only Microsoft updates. I have deleted a couple of programs. I have AVG firewall and did a scan using Adaware a couple of weeks ago. Will do one tonight. I did see that my kids updated Limewire to the newest version, however, the problems started before this.

Re: Computer freezes when shutting down

Hi There I Have A Similar Problem But Mine Wont Shutdown At All It Restats Itself Everytime. I Have To Wait Til The Windows Is Shutting Down Message Comes Up On The Screen And Then Hold The Power Button In For It To Shutoff. Then When I Turn It On I Push The Button In Switch The Power Point On And Off And Then It Starts!!! Every Thing Else Runs Ok Except It Restarts Itself Once In A While. I HAVE NOT ADDED OR TAKEN OFF ANY PROGRAMS AND I HAVE THE 2007 NORTONS ANTIVIRUS.

@ jackie66

You have Norton.

What can i say, it's like having ebola. 30% survive.

Seriously, do not use anything Norton.
