Clean installation of windows xp sp3

I replaced my laptop's hard disk drive and I am going to install windows xp sp3.

However, no driver CDs came with my laptop when I bought it. Will I need to install any drivers (for my laptop's devices like motherboard, graphics card, sound card)?

Or by just installing Win XP SP3 everything will work properly?

I have not done this before, so any help will be much appreciated.

Hi nikolasapl !

What's the brand and exact model of your laptop ?

If your laptop uses a sata controller chances are your hard drive won't be detected by a regular XP SP3 CD. Most drivers can be installed once you're within Windows but the sata controller driver may need to be slipstreamed on the XP CD first.

Laptops usually come with preinstalled software that allows to create a recovery DVD, if you still have the old drive I would reinstall it and create that DVD, the event 51 errors shouldn't prevent that, else you may be able to order it from the manufacturer.

Installing XP on a SATA drive requires an additional step:

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_install_windows_xp_on_a.htm

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

If there are no such settings you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

http://www.digitgeek.com/how-to-slipstream-sata-drivers-into-xp-cd/

You can download the drivers from the Sony support site:

You can install them after the OS is installed.
Are these the drivers you are using?

Is there the option to change in the BIOS the Sata to IDE?
Seeing this model came with XP you may not have to use the sata driver.

I would advise you to use SP2 (instead of SP3).
SP3 is known to create issues with Audio drivers if the driver is not installed first on some computers. To avoid this I usually use SP2, install all the drivers and then upgrade to SP3.

No,
Just leave it set to IDE and install XP
No need to install the sata drivers.
Boot order should be:
CD-Rom (first)
HDD
Insert the XP disc in your CD-ROM
Boot up the computer
XP Cd should boot up and begin the install
Once done install the drivers
Make sure you install the Chipset driver first, then the rest of the drivers
Do the MS UPDATES
Install your antivirus/malware protection.
