My daughter has a wireless network set up with SBC DSL using a 2Wire modem. Her sister and another roomate have Internet access. The 2Wire is in the room where there is intermittent access. This has gone on for three months. Finally, we installed a Netgear adapter because we discovered the green light was not on in the back of her tower. Now, the green light is on and the new adapter is recognized. We didn't remove the old adapter. When she starts her computer now, her screen is black after the XP logo. Please help because SBC techs are of no help.

The old adapter was removed and she recycled but she is still getting the black screen. Yesterday, when she was able access the internet for a short time before the black screen came up again, I had her use her XP Home CD-Rom to try to repair any possible corrupted files. She couldn't do that because she got a message saying the Windows on her system was more up-to-date than her CD-Rom. Is that because she downloaded SP2 a few months ago? Should she uninstall Windows and reinstall it and set up her wireless network again? Please help. Classes have already started and we are both getting frustrated.

Thank you,
Denise

Oh, I wouldn't give up that quickly and reformat.........

Not quite sure what you mean here......can you elaborate a bit?

Yes, it is, but the CD may yet be useful.

So, how many PC's are on this wireless network?

What model 2Wire Modem do they have?

Maybe she should try removing the wireless adapter for now as well, then re-install it after you have confirmed this is/is not the cause of the startup issue.

My husband and I are going to have to make a trip to their college tomorrow afternoon to take the new adapter out, as you suggested, and put it back in. Then, we'll recycle the modem again. She uses the 2Wire 1800HW Wireless DSL modem/router. The desktop and 2Wire are in her room. There are three more roomates (one, is another daughter) and two of them have laptops. None of them have any problem using their computers. If we still get the black screen, is their anything else that might be the problem? Does the black screen mean there is so type of conflict with hardware?

Thank you for helping,
Denise
