Okay guys, I am just about at my wit's end here. I will start by describing my major issue at the current moment and then attempt to a give a background about the problem, how it started, and some sort of a timeline.
My pc (actually my first build) : intel core2quad q6600, 2 gig crucial ballistix (4-4-4-12), xfx geforce 8800 gts, lg cd/dvd writer, barracuda 320 mb hd, antec 900.
As it stands right now, I am trying to reinstall windows xp pro on my computer using a legit OEM disk that i bought. My computer will NOT boot into any of the safe modes currently (it just hangs as it is loading the drivers), in regular windows xp (it doesn't even show the windows xp logo with the little scrolling animation on the bootom), OR FROM THE WINDOWS CD! Everytime I try to boot from CD, it will start loading all the drivers and whatnot from the disc and then I see the "Setup is now starting Windows" and then the computer just hangs there.
I also had tried to install windows from xp a couple of days ago when I could still get into safe mode and so the installation started just fine, it even downloaded updates for the installer and then told me to restart. On restart, I can see the partition that the windows setup created and I load it. Once again, it will say "Starting windows" and then I get a stop error BSOD. ---> either saying something like page fault in non paged area, or bad pool header. Here are the numbers from the blue screen: 0x00000050 (0xe19490b0, 0x00000000, 0x808cadc8, 0x00000002).
I am pretty sure I have a virus. All this started around feb 16th when I was in the middle of a game and as the next level was loading up, the computer stuttered, I saw a bsod, and the comp restarted. chalking it up to the game, I downloaded a patch for it and didn't think much of it. After that incident, the bsods starting increasing in frequency: if i played an HD movie, or if i clicked too fast inside Firefox, or seemingly at random. I tried a million anti virus/spyware checks - avg, kaspersky, superantiyspyware, windows defender but the checks would either reveal nothing or the computer would restart while the scans were running. Every installer that I downloaded would get corrupted. In fact, I tried downloading an installer once and before running it, made it READ ONLY. I had read somewhere that viruses can get to exe files that you run, so i tried that little test and the installer actually ran fine.
It was at this point that I realized that things were just getting worse so THANK GOD I had the foresight to clear about 60 gigs or so from an external hard drive and transfer all my important files and folders on to it. The very next day I couldn't get into XP at all and safe mode would only work like once out of every 5 restarts or so.
Okay, sorry for all this long-windedness but i figured some background might help you guys understand what is going on here because I am clueless. In any case, right now all I want to do is format my hard drive and get a fresh install of xp pro on it. I just can't get to a command prompt. The comp doesn't boot from the windows disc so I can't get into the recovery console. I can't get into safe mode, and everytime I try to boot into the partition that windows setup created I get a BSOD. Is there any hope for me here? What should my next steps be? Do the above symptoms point you guys towards a particular bug or virus?
There is no floppy drive on this computer, only a cd/dvd drive. I do have access to another computer which is in the same room so if i need to download and burn things, I am capable of doing that. I just really need to get this thing fixed because I have finals coming up and I am just goin to be thinking about ways to fix it in my head instead of cramming pathology unless I can take care of it soon.
Thank you for reading this really long post, any comments, suggestions, solutions will be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED!!!! Moreover, if you need any more info I will be glad to offer it. Thanks in advance.
Edit: oops, I forgot to add that I have a 700W GameXstream PSU from OCZ. Also, I am sure someone is thinking that the computer might be overheating or one of the fans isn't working. I check into BIOS from time to time and the system is running really cool (around 27-30 dg celcius) and all the case fans are on high and are all working. Just thought I would add that piece of info.
