Reboot your machine, and enter BIOS (hit F1, Esc, Delete or whatever to get in) Set ATAPI CD-ROM as your primary boot device, insert the XP cd and start up.
When the PC says "Press any key to boot form CD.." press a key.
let XP do its thing. Press enter to install, F8 to agree to the EULA, and then R to repair windows

If you dont have the R option and it takes you straight to format then you will have to repair thru the XP recovery console-- what was the original problem with your computer?

well first of all it .. out of no where it said i need original windows xp cd.. then went black screen.. i think when i tried to plug it back in later on..

but then it got knocked off lil table and cords came out of drive- which makes it a black screen also.

sorry i didnt read your post properly.
did u already put all your RAM in?
what about your adapters (graphics card, network card, etc)

okay on the top corner of your tower is a power box. with many yellow, black and red wires coming out right?
put the biggest one into the motherboard- the slot should be near the ram slots.

find another coloured wire with a short plug that looks like this except it only has FOUR wires going in. Plug that into the socket on your floppy drive

attached to the same wire should be a larger version (pictured above) shove that into ur hard drive.

Grab another red, black and yellow wire with another plug like the one pictured above and put it into your CD drive.

Now look at the wires coming out of your machines power, restert and/or sleep buttons. are they going anywhere?

No, i have'nt put my ram back in thats a good idea im just scared im gonna put it in backwards..:(

my sony has a built in drive.. yes there is 2 of those cords u shown in pic.. then theres 2 other black long skinny ones.. theres holes for all of them i just dont know which 1 goes were..

these 4 cords.. 2 like the picture and 2 skinny black 1's.. all go into the 2 drives.. which is the 2 cd spots at the top of my tower(case slids open at top)..& i do have a burner..

so i think my set up would like alot diff compared to other computers considering my computer has a built in drive.

Sony Viao:model Number:pCV-7762.... aight im gonna game it/might go to sleep... lv 1

i gotta put ram back in.. cords in.. then pow hopefully it works..

The flat cable with a two black ends and a black middle and is called and IDE ribbon cable. They come in two types 40 pin 40 wire and 40 oin 80 wire. The hard drive must use the 80 wire kind.
Normally the hard drives connect to the one which connects to the motherboard connection labled Primary IDE(Or IDE 1). The CDROM and DVD would connect to the one labled Secondary(IDE2) on the motherboard (the cables themselves are rarely labled.

(See notch in socket and ridge on cable?)
Normally you connect the master drive of a chain to the end and the slave to the middle (if you have two drives on one cable) and if you only have one you connect it to the end of the cable.
The cable can only go in one way , there should be either a ridge or a plug in one hole (with corresponding pin missing on the drive) DO NOT FORCE IT IN UPSIDE DOWN OR YOU WILL BE BUYING A NEW DRIVE.
Likewise, the power connector will go in easily the correct way, but if you force it in upside down it will burn things out. IT is shaped with one edge having a cutout angle corner which corresponds to one in the drive socket.

k well.. now that i got cam and cd.. i do have to get the cords in.. i understand where to put them i just dont know if they all go in.. theres 2 kinds of cords.. 2 kinds of the black 1's.. then 2 kinds of the ones with all the coloured wires.. i really dont know which goes where it could be either 50/50 chance..

all i know is 1 cord says p6.. and 1 says p7..

thanks for all the info.. ya i was trying to shove them in alot hopefully i did"nt do any damage..
once i get cords in it couldbe a black screen or it might say insert windows cd.. either way im gonna put cd into top slot and hopefully something will pop up..

Im scared. i really dont want to go to the store and pay for it to get fixed i spent a 1000 dollars on thiz pz of poop.. lol brb later..

Did you ever get all the cables reconnected correctly?
IT sounds like you were very confused about where things go.

You need to connect the CDROM with the wide flat data cable to the motherboard where it says Secondary IDE or IDE2
The hard drive connects by another wide flat cable to the motherboard where it says primary IDE or IDE 1

You connect them to the power connectors from the power supply which look like flattened D and probably say P6 on them

Note that because of the shaved off corner it only goes in one way.
Likewise the ribbon cables only fit in one way.

It really sounds like you need someone who knows how to build a PC or you need to take the time to read a full tutorial on building a PC so that you can reconnect things.
