Currently I am at a loss with this, it is my fathers computer and me being the tech savvy son, has to try and fix this. Currently I've flushed my DNS, tried switching Ethernet cables. Fixing the registry in case there was any issues. I have done multiple sorts of tests to try and get it working.

Now a more detailed issues with the problem.

Websites work, most of them do anyways. The websites that dont work are everything that is dealing with a search. Such as google will not load. Yahoo will load but it will not go into a search when i try to search for anything at all.

209.85.255.104 works for google to make it load, once I try searching, it goes back to google.com/blahbalbhalblah. So If anyone has any idea on why this is not working that would be awesome.

His computer runs windows 98, has Eset Anti virus that I put on there, (tried disabling it).

His cmd prompt will not working either, which is probably another issue, I cannot access anything on the command line, such as Ipconfig /all.

hope thats enough information.

PS: I have had a friend who had this similar problems but it was every website for him. Currently the issue lead to his router not reading the domains correctly or something. We also recently got a hub since we ran out of ethernet space.

I have an old Win 98 system that I hope to maintain forever as it
has some legacy software that is unavailable for newer op sytems
( indeed some dos programs as well that I need ) and I currently
have a 125 GB hard drive roughly partitioned as
primary partition C, Extended partition D E F and G. Each of these
logical drives is approximately 25 GB.

I have read here that the Win98 system supports a max of 127GB partitions.

I want to clarify what that means. Does that mean if I purchase
a 500 GB drive I can create the primary active partition (C:) as 127GB
and the Extended Partition also as a total cumulative of 125GB
thereby using about half of the disk drive ? D,E,F and G, each being
approx 31 GB ?

I have Acronnis True Image 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0 that I have used
in the past to clone and enlarge my disks on Win 98 system
and wonder if I can use one of the software packages to once
again clone my existing drive to the (connected as a slave)
new 500GB drive but effectively only using half of it. I will also
want to take the drive from time to time and connect as slave
in my XP Pro system to copy files off the FAT 32 drive to my larger
NTFS drive on my XP-pro system.

If anyone can recommend a better software utility than Acronnis I
would appreciate it. It is important that I avoid using any exotic
software drivers to achieve what I want because I need to be
able to take my disk and install in other systems to copy the
data as backup from time to time.
Thanks
Scott in Atlanta

Hi all,
I've found another project.Another one that I can't figure out. No big surprise.
Here's my problem.
I came across a really nice Compaq Presario 1610,that's like new,and seems to work OK. It had windows 95,so I upgraded it to windows 98.
I'm now trying to get it to go online, but, all it has is a telephone dial-up-type modem connection.(no E cable connector)
I've tried to use Linksys USB and card slot type wireless connectors.
I can't get either the USB or the card slot connections to work with this computer.
Windows can't find any drivers for these devices, and the CD's that came with the wireless connectors won't load/open/do anything.

Am I doing some thing wrong,or is it that the Windows 98 will not operate a wireless connection, having only a dial-up modem?

Please keep in mind,I know this is an old POS computer that's worth squat,Okay, less than squat, but playing around with these old junkers is just a hobby, one that keeps me out of the bars. Which I can no longer afford to frequent.
Thanks for any advice folks.

After experiencing this problem with my newer PC, my only option for getting online technical support was to dig out my ten year old computer and connect that up.

I have experienced this problem before about six years ago. It was caused by some sort of virus, and I fixed it by going into safe mode and doing... something. I don't remember what, but I thought it was resolved. I got a much better computer about four or five years ago and didn't use it for a while. That computer eventually got struck by lightning, forcing me to get the old one out again and it worked fine at the time until I was able to purchase a third computer, which is the one that experienced the random system failure, or at least what I think is a random system failure.

Anyways, the error says 'Windows cannot find Shell32.exe. This program is needed to open files of type 'application'' And then it asks me to identify the location of Shell32.exe. Well, I don't know where it is. According to a computer search there are no files by that name on my PC. This error comes up when I attempt to load any program, with the odd exception of a 'shortcut to Internet Explorer' in the top section of my start menu but does occur when I attempt to load Internet Explorer from the taskbar. I can't even change the date and time on this computer without getting that error.

This seems like a simple fix, unlike the other one. Get a working Shell32.exe for Windows 98, put it in the right place, and it works fine right? Trouble is all my searches bring up stuff for Windows XP, even though I specify Windows 98 in the search lines and they're also for Shell.exe and not Shell32.exe.

I'm not even sure why this was happening as it was working fine the last time I used it, so I'm not sure why that old problem would be resurfacing, or if it even is the old problem as opposed to the file somehow getting deleted by non malware means. But I suspect simply replacing the file would fix everything, so I put it in the Win98 board and not the malware board.
