Hello,

This is my first post and I'm not sure that I have chose the right forum, but this is a clock related matter. I have an application that I'm writing and I need an accurate high frequency timer capable of 100kHz.

Now before you say that is impossible I would like to inform you that it is currently being done in Windows XP on my PC without any additional hardware and it consumes only 6 to 7 percent of the processor time, but not with my software.

I have been researching this matter for a couple of years, but not with determination I have had lately. I ran across this article:
http://www.dedicated-systems.com/mag...001q3_p077.pdf and I thought that I had found something so I started studying the 8253 Programmable Interval Timer, or PIT as it is more commonly called. It is stated many times on the internet that most all modern computers have an 8253/8254 PIT.

After spending a couple of hours studying the chip I decided to pull out one my spare mainboards so that I could get a visual on the chip. That is when all of my effort became a waste of time as my mainboard does not have anything that I can identify as a timer. South bridge is SiS645DX and North bridge is SiS962.

Can any of you shed any light on this subject?

So I've got a PC that I've built from scratch myself and have finally got all the kinks worked out and settled down, it's stable and working well.

I've made sure every part is kitted with good solid third party cooling, no stock parts here.

Basically I want to start overclocking, I'll list what I have-what's cooling it and protecting it all and I'd love to know where to go from there. I've no idea which BIOS settings to adjust or which OC software to use. I'd really appreciate some help.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU- intel core 2 Quad (2.4ghz)
----- Zalman 1000 heatsink.
-----Akasa 450 thermal paste

PSU- Thermaltake Toughpower 750w

RAM- 2x A-Data 2gb DDR2 RAM modules with copper heatsink "sleaves"
----- 2x Kingston 1gb DDR2 RAM modules, no heatsink

Motherboard- ASUS P5N-E SLi board. BIOS was flashed with most up-to-date version last week.
------ Northbridge is cooled with Zalman copper heatsink w/ small 30mm fan.
------ Southbridge has a simple metal heatsink stuck over it.

GPU- XFX ATi HD 4890
----- cooled with thermaright t-rad^2 gtx. It's fitted with 2x Scythe Kama 92mm fans. A second heatsink, "VRM-2" is also placed as is required by thermalright for the t-rad to fit.

(Finally) CASE- Antec 300
-------- fitted with a full set of Scythe Kama 120mm fans (2x front, 2x back, 1x top, 1x side)

Running Win7 Ultimate x64bit.

--------------------------------------------------

I used to have an XFX 4890 black edition which had a 1000mhz clock speed out of the box. It died and was RMAd, as of now the replacement is the plain 4980.

I've tried a *small?* overclock of the GPU by pushing the clock speed from 850mhz to 1000mhz using the ATI catalyst program. My system is fully stable.

So I've put in all this detail...but what can I actually change? I hear quad-cores can be OCed by +20%. Could I push my GPU further? I'm just not sure what to do.. Suggestions?

I have 4 fans running in my computer. One on the processor, another at the side sucking hot air out of the case, one blowing air out the back, and one 120MM on the power supply blowing air throughout the case and some out the back as well. It seems to me i have a really good cooling setup. My processor idles at 35 degrees celcius and under load its around 38 or 40. Do you think its safe to start overclocking? HELP! Thanx!!!

I was wondering what heats up when raising the FSB speed while lowering the multiplier, so that the CPU frequency remains the same, and what would be the advantages?

Thnx in adv.
I have always used Everest and love that software. But which one is the most accurate?. That is near 10 degrees of difference per program.

Ethernet Stop Working When Overclock

Whenever I overclock (somewhere) past 3.6GHz, my on board Ethernet totally stops working; it says "there is no ethernet controller installed" or something.

Could this have something to do with the FSB or the voltages?

System specs attached.

Thanks

First of all I am currently running:

Windows 7 x64
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
ASUS P5Q Motherboard
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 4GB (2x2GB)
tx-750w Corsair PSU

I am currently at my aim of about 4GHz but keep getting blue screen while running Prime95 for a couple minutes with the returned error.

Code:

Problem signature:
  Locale ID: 3081

Additional information about the problem:
  OS Version: 6_1_7600
  Service Pack: 0_0
  Product: 256_1

My current settings are:

Multiplier: 8.5
FSB Speed: 470
vCore: 1.34v
DRAM: 2.1v
NB: 1.26v
SB: 1.1v

I'm not quite sure why but in CPU-Z it is telling me that I am still running everything at stock and vCore at 1.32v. While stressing I am only getting around 56C so I don't think that I'm overheating.

Any ideas?
