I have an 18hp Kohler Command engine on my zero-turn lawn mower, and I would like to increase the hp to 20 or 22 hp.

As I mow uphill, I must slow my travel speed down to keep the blade speed up. With another couple of hp, I wouldn't need to slow down.

Per the manual I have, the 18, 20 & 22hp engines all have the same bore & stroke.

Has anyone attempted this before? If so, what was the result and what was done?

Carb swap? Jet swap? Cam swap? Head/valve swap? Combo of them?

Any comments or advice is welcome.

Thanks!

It is coming from shaft which goes into crank case on the magneto side of the engine. I removed the flywheel to expose the shaft and bushing and located the point where the oil leaks. I believe I need to replace the seal. I am not sure how to do this......I do know there is a bushing/seal kit...I am not sure if I need both bushing and seal. However, and most impor:wave:tantly I have no idea as to how to remove the bushing to get at the seal to replace it. Can you please advise as to how to change the seal and bushing if also required to fix the leak. The unit has had only seasonal use and runs quite well; it is otherwise in excellent shape. Thanks for your help on this ....Dennis in Buffalo, NY

I purchased a Champion 3000/35000 watt generator with a 6.5 h.p. ohv engine in Feb. This generator is used around the farm to run a saw or small air compressor. It was working fine but recently has developed a bad miss. When the engine is first started it runs fine until it warms up and then starts missing. The engine runs and starts fine other than the miss. I have changed gas, cleaned the carb., cleaned the spark arrestor adjusted the valves and changed the plug and air filter but nothing has helped. It doesn't have but maybe 10 hours on it! Could this be the coil going bad? I don't know of anything else to check. The plug is always clean and there is no smoke of any kind.

I have a lawn vacuum with a B&S engine (122K02-0025-E1, 02052359). Until yesterday, it had worked fine. Yesterday, part way through a fuel load, it ran but the power seemed low and it began running roughly. I cleaned the air filter, which made no improvement, then replaced it with another filter from a lawn mower - again, no change. After the fuel tank was empty, I filled with fuel that had been bought in late summer and had Stabil added. I then had difficulty starting the engine - had to repeatedly prime the engine and it would run until the prime was gone. It finally started but was still running rough and had what appeared to be about 50% power.

This morning, I had to try repeatedly to get it started and it still ran as it did yesterday - rough (sputtering) and low power. I removed the spark plug and it looked good but I cleaned it with a wire brush and regapped it. No change.

I suspect a problem with the carburetor - perhaps dirt??? But I have never worked on a small engine carburetor before. Any chance that spraying some carb cleaner in the air intake would help??? With lots of leaves on the ground, a quick fix would be nice!

Any suggestions, do you think my troubleshooting is valid? Can someone point me to a good guide to removing and repairing the carburetor on this engine?

Thanks,

Jim

I let it cool down some, still the same. Turned it on the side and manually moved the blade, which allowed me to rotate it.
Back upright, could pull the cord, but no start.
Yes, I was a bit negligent, the oil hadn't been changed, and was low. I added fresh, about 14 oz. Would pull, but no start.
Checked the spark plug, was black, got an identical new one, verified there was a spark before installing it. Still no start.
Checked air filter, was a little dirty, but not bad. Cleaned out well. Choke line does engage as it should. No evidence of dirt or crud behind the filter.
Then I drained the oil, looked dark, made certain as much could drain out as possible.
Added fresh to full. Would pull, but still no start. Does not fire up at all. Sounds like it is getting close.
-- Thoughts, help, please/

My 7 year old lawn tractor has been giving me starting problems for the past couple of months, and recently, won't start at all. Engine is an 18 hp briggs and stratton.

Symptoms used to be: lots of smoke at start up (bluish). After a few minutes of warm up, things seemed to be run normally.

Symptoms now are: As the engine cranks (but does not start), an oily gas mixture is expelled from the front bottom of the engine. I cannot tell exactly where the discharge is coming from, but it seems like quite a bit and makes a big mess.

Is this thing salvageable, or have I somehow destroyed the engine?

Thanks for any advice or input.
