Heatsink Retention Bracket Confusion

While searching online for a suitable heatsink/fan, I found it impossible to determine if a given socket 754 heatsink will fit this bracket. Most would appear not to, since the bracket is 4" across.

I see that some socket 754 motherboards don't feature the bracket, although most do. Can I assume that any socket 754 heatsink will work? I don't want to order a heatsink only to find it won't fit.

I recently bought a phenom II 965 for my crosshair III, and am having 1 heck of a time finding a cpu cooler that will fit on the crosshair...

I bought the noctua cooler but the mounting kit only allows it to face upwards towards the top, and the sides go about an inch over both DIMM slots, so it wont fit. Ive looked online and i cant for the life of me find one that will fit this wacky motherboard. The stock cooler isnt doing very good.. i had to drop the fan to 3000 RPM's because at the max (5900) it was ear piercing. My temps atm are 41 celcius idle and up to 57 celcius while playing games. Im not an expert with cpu temps but this seems really high even if the max temp is 65 celcius.. so i really want an aftermarket solution.

Price isnt a problem, but if u guys could please link some size friendly AM3 socket coolers i would love you forever. Thanks ^^

(over time) Laptop doesn't turn on at all.

The person I got it from took it to geek squad and they said probably dead cpu.

What it does is, press power button, lights come on, fan comes on for 2 seconds, then it does nothing. Leave ram out, same thing. No beeps.

When I opened it up, the cpu cooler wasn't fully attached, meaning that thing could have overheated 30x over. PLUS the battery sits close to the cpu.

Dead cpu? Or am I not catching some hints to something else that I should be? :4-dontkno

First a little history. A year ago I bought a premade computer from newegg and it worked fine. Then the power supply got clogged and overheated and it wouldn't work anymore. I tried it with a new ps but it still wouldn't work so I figured the mobo must've been fried.

Now I just replaced the mobo and got a new hard drive and ps along with it. Everything else I still use from the old computer. Now it randomly shuts down. Sometimes it makes it to the desktop, other times it barely gets to the bios menu. All fans are working so I don't think it's overheating. I tried reapplying the thermal compound multiple times, the third time the computer lasted quite long and I managed to get quite far in the os install but it still shut down. I've checked the capacitors and they seem to be ok. I have no idea what's happening. I really hope I can get this problem fixed.

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad
GeForce 9500 GT
4gb of ram (it works in other computers so can't be the problem)
Mod X stream-pro M009 power supply

Also I noted that it stayed on really long when the computer was on its side and shut down moments after I put it upright if that has any meaning. Just that one time though that I reapplied the thermal compound.

Really appreciate all help.

EDIT: Why is it that people always find the answers right after asking the question? Sorry all for wasting your time and thought processes.

Problem = loose heat sink fan.

I just put together an Intel Atom system, using the Motherboard / CPU combo D945GCLF2 with the N330 CPU and the GMA 950 onboard video. When I connect it to my LCD monitor with a VGA cable at 1280X1024 @ 60Hz the screen trembles and has horizontal lines through it kind of like the weird artifacts you see when you play a damaged VHS tape. Adjusting the monitors phase and pitch makes it a little better, but nothing makes it go away. Do I need to get a DVI video card or is there something I can do to make this go away? This is insanely irritating. Thanks!

Regards,
I put everything into the computer and it powers on, but I dont see anything on my display. So here is my questions.

1. ATX power supply: It has a 24 pin connector with the extra 4 pin connector not attached to the main 20 pin connector. Do I plug the 24 pin connector in AND plug the 4pin 12v connector in as well?

2. What the heck is up with my display? I have plugged my monitor into the onboard VGA and DVI and into the video card VGA and DVI yet I dont see anything.
