Hi all,

I am running vista business on my computer and using it as a host for 2 other computers media needs. These other computers are running XP SP2 and Vista Home.

The problem is after a certain date all files added to the directory cannot be seen by both these computers and are only accessable by watching them on my computer which defeats the purpose of having a personal computer.

All the other files are running fine and streaming perfectly but the other new files cannot be found by any means that I have tried.

All sharing and discovery options are on in the network and sharing center except password sharing and printer sharing.

Any ideas for what I should try

Please help, thanks in advance.

After getting the network issue resolved to where I could see all other computers on our network I still can't access the shared resource which is a partition on the server's hard drive. I've set up permissions for this computer and put them in two groups, the Users group and the Drafting_group, both of which I've assigned to other employees with no problem. No matter what I try I can not get the access from the shipping computer. Am I missing something?

Just a little more info. I have turned off the firewalls and that didn't help. I have restarted services in Computer Management on the server and that didn't help. This computer is in an established workgroup. We do not use a domain.

We recently got a Western Digital World Book II for our office and I have all of our company files on it. There are a few files that I would like to make read only. Every time I open the properties for the file and change it to read only it does not stick. When you open the properties again it back to normal. When I click on the Security tab and click edit to change the permissions as soon as I select Deny for the Modify permission every option (Modify, Read & Execute, Read etc..) goes to deny. Is there a simple fix? Even if someone could point to an article on File Permissions in Vista I would appreciate it, I don't know much about this topic.

Thanks,

Hello All,

I administer single domain network wit the domain controller running windows 2003 server. The client computers are running on XP and some win 2000 professional.

The main problem is that users keep calling IT saying the cant print and on ascertaining the problem I realize I have to Reconnect to the shared printer which is hosted by one of the client computers. I do this by typing in the run dialog \\computer-name.

This opens the shared folders of the host computer and I right click on the shared printer then click connect and then instruct the user to send the print

Some times when I try the above, I receive the error message "There are currently no logon servers to service the logon request" To overcome this I take the computer off the domain by joining it to a work group then rejoin the domain and then re do the first option.

This keeps happening and I need to find a long term solution to this. I will be grateful for any support towards this problem

Hi,

I have a Vista Basic laptop and although I can share the shared folder fine, I want to be able to share the Users folder but so that remote users have to enter a username and password. To do this I have set the permissions of the User folder so that only Authenticated users and Administrators can access the folder. I remember with an old laptop running XP Pro, when clicking on said folder an authentication dialogue would pop up and I could enter my user name and password used on the laptop and access the folder but it seems in my Windows XP Home PC I simply get an '****\Users is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource etc...'. Is this a restriction in XP Home or am I doing something wrong?

We are running two computers with XP Home Ed. and have been sharing files from one to the other for 5 years just fine.

We use Word Perfect 12 for our word processing and save all of the documents on one computer and share it with the other.

Yesterday I pulled my XP system out of the network and hooked up my new computer running Vista. Now when I try to access any Word Perfect documents from the XP computer or PDF's it says "File is in use or marked Read-only" "You may only view the document not edit it."

Can anyone help me with this? How can the XP system all of a sudden mark everything read-only. I tried checking the properties on the XP system and unchecking read-only. It doesn't work.

I have searched the net to see if anyone has had this problem, but not found anything similar.

Help.....

Years ago I found the info I needed to resolve this problem, but I never wrote it down and can't find it again.

OK it's like this. I have tried everything I could find on this subject from shutting off the Windows Firewalls to disabling simple file sharing and setting the NTFS permission for everyone to Full Control and I still can't get my system to show up on Anna’s system in the My Network Places and since changing the workgroup on both systems from “Workgroup” to “MSHOME” I can no longer access the files and folders on Anna’s system from mine though I could before the change.

I have made sure that the "restrictanonymous" is set to 0 on both systems in the registry and that the NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled.

I have checked the Local security settings and made sure that the "Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" is disabled on both systems.

There are no virus scanners in the way. I have done everything I could find on google and still no resolution. I am at my wits end. Please someone end this nightmare. Thank you.
