I have an HP Pavilion dv9000, actually it's someone else's. When I power it up I get three beeps and then the screen won't turn on. Sometimes, however, it doesn't beep, and then the screen will turn on. At some point the screen was broken by the left hinge. On this version of the Pavilion they put the Kensington security slot on the left side of the screen. I'm wondering if that being broken is somehow connecting into the screen not working. Because, as I said, sometimes the screen works and sometimes it doesn't, so its almost like it could be that security slot and when its making connection its working and when it isn't it doesn't. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it possible that a K security slot would actually interfere with how the computer works? I've never heard of that before....
Thanks,
I hooked up an external monitor and it worked fine. I changed the inverter out and that did not resolve the problem. I have just replaced the screen and that hasn't resolved the problem either. I am competent with computers and repair, but this has me beaten. Any ideas? :4-dontkno

OK guys so this is my first post and it might be a bit lengthy, sorry in advance.

I have a Hp Dv7-1245dx that yesterday got stuck in what I thought to be Hibernation. I turned the computer off and all I got was black screen with flashing leds and flashing caps lock. I went home and searched this site (great info BTW) and did all of the tests in Night_shifts black screen test. I got no where. Finally when I was going to throw in the towel, I got a screen that said:

Check Sum error

Press <F5> to load default
Press <F6> to continue

So I pressed F6 and it tried to load but I had the HDD out along with the CD drive. I turned off the machine and installed the HDD and it worked perfectly!!
But the second I installed the CD Drive it went back to the black screen.. I said ok just redo everything you did before just dont put back the cd drive. I did this with no results just black screen.

TOday I continued to tinker and try different things. After blowing out the computer for about the 5th time I got the error mess again, although this time I was not able to do anything after that, it did nothing when I pressed the F5-F6 keys. I shut it down and right back to the black screen..

I appreciate any help you guys can give. I seem to think it has a CPU or Motherboard issue, but I cant figure out how to get to the CPU to inspect it or even swap it..

Thanks :sigh:

Well, the tool has forgotten his password and has entered it wrong too many times and he got the message saying it was entering an halted state and now it can't be turned back on again... is this the halted state causing it not to turn on or could there be another problem with it?

If it is the halted state causing the problem could i just remove the bios battery and try powering it back on as it should reset the CMOS right??

Thanks in advance and any speedy replies will be greatly appreiciated as he needs it for work.

I'm looking for some ideas on how to investigate why my PC starts heating up.

The CPU temperature of my HP laptop runs for days at about 31 Deg C. Then randomly the temperature will climb until the fan comes on and the clock speed will start being reduced. This happens even though the CPU usage is typically around 15% or less. When this has happened, I have shut down all of the applications with no effect. I have looked at the processes listed in task manager and none of them are using any CPU time.
Once the temperature climbs it does not recover. I just shut it down.
The laptop is setting on a base that allows lots free air flow on the bottom and all sides.

My PC is HP G50 Notebook
Intel Pentium Dual T3400 @ 2.16GHz 2.17 GHz
3 GB ram
I opened up the laptop and saw that there were three ventilation shafts. One on the bottom on the computer, one on the side and one on the back. The shaft on the back had been blocked. Is this supposed to be like this?
Also, i took compressed air to the shafts to clean them out, and still get the sounds.

I have an acer aspire 5000 that overheats. It's always overheated, but now it's gotten bad, don't know if the weather outside or not has affected it, has just started since the weather got rediculously hot and humid. And I left it in the car, hope that didn't hurt it.

I took off the fan cover and got all the dust out, not much effect, if any any. I have read in some other thread that a new heating module could work as well as a cooling pad. Any other ideas, or should i just use it as fire wood? Its a older computer (5yrs or so), but if i can get it to stay on, I would rather do that then have to buy a new computer.

I don't have many computer skills and Im not sure how much a module costs and if that would help or not, any ideas would be great. thanks.
