Hi everybody,

I'm new to the forum so bear with me if my lingo is not too technical.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows XP Home Edition..Sadly it crashed rather seriously a few months ago and I used the recovery disk to restore it back to factory condition...Thankfully my files and programs were all backed up.

I was unable to restore it and as a matter of urgency had to buy a new computer...a HP G60-214EM running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit. I dont really like it as so many of my programs are not compatible and I have to run various software and driver downloads in order to make things work properly....my Epson printer for example.

I wish to get my old Toshiba running again but every time I try to boot it this message comes up :

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original CD-Rom
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

Can anybody help me here ?...I don't really know where to start....The Toshiba never had a setup disk only a recovery, additional software and Tools & Utilities disks....

Thanks and everybody have an enjoyable weekend..

i got an alienware, and it hasnt really been much trouble until now. the computer starts up just fine and runs great, but after a minute or 2 the monitor loses the signal from the computer. also the keyboard has a display on it with the time, game info, and several other things and it is still getting power after the monitor but the clock stops ticking since it gets the time from the computer and everything. i originally just thought he video card is going out or maybe my cable is messed up or something but the keyboard basically locking up as well has kind of got me stumped. only thing i can think of is the motherboard is shorting out or that windows is crashing or something. any and all help would be appreciated

Hello,

Sure hope someone can help me with this. Certain desktop shortcuts created in IE-7 keep showing wrong logo -- i.e. for entirely different company! It's always the same 8 or 9 shortcuts.

Examples: My Hotmail logo appears with an Old English sort of "T" (Daily Telegraph?)...Google shows wrong company logo...All 4 shortcuts to pages on my own web site will show Bank of America logo (often after I've visited that on-line banking site). Another site shows the eBay logo!

Deleting these misbehaving shortcuts will not solve the problem. The very same "wrong" logos will appear on the newly created shortcuts.

Strangest thing is: If I put computer in Standby mode for perhaps a couple hours the lgos in question will correct themselves!

I should mention that each of the shortcuts in question will access the CORRECT site, but the wrong logos have me flummoxed!

Any help in resolving this will be most appreciated.

I used to have issues with XP not wanting to start up only 50% of the time. When it wouldn't start up it would get stuck at the black screen with the XP logo and the blue progress bar going across. Eventually the progress bar would just freeze up and it would just get stuck there. I used to be able to turn it off and on again and it would start up normally so I never stressed about it. I did recently format and reinstall XP completely and it quit doing it for a while so I thought I resolved it....

However, recently, it started getting stuck at the XP logo everytime, no matter how many times I turned it off and on again. So today, I opened it up, unplugged and replugged in everything including the CPU, video card, fans, hard drives, and RAM (four 1GB sticks).

After plugging everything back in, now when I start it up, the fans and drives all start moving but I just get a completely black screen screen. No text, no bios info, no motherboard logo, no XP logo, nothing on the screen. During this, the internal speaker will beep for a moment every few seconds. I turned it back off and made sure everything was plugged in securely but it still does it.

So to narrow down what is causing the problem I took out three of the RAM sticks so there was only one stick in the first slot. Turned it back on and it showed the normal boot up info and once again got stuck at the XP logo like before. I am able to boot into safe mode when it is like this. I turned it off, added a second stick of ram into the second slot, turned it on and it went back to nothing on the screen and the computer beeping. I took the second stick out and moved it to the third slot (so I have one stick in the first slot and one stick in the third slot, nothing in the second or fourth slot). It didn't get stuck on the black screen, but once again got stuck on the XP logo. I was also able to boot into safe mode at this point. I then put third stick of RAM into the second slot (so I now have three sticks of RAM in the first three slots) and turned it on and now it gets stuck at the Motherboard logo and won't go past it.

I have tested these different ram configurations several times and it produces the same results every time. Anytime it actually gets to the XP logo, I can boot into safe mode but can never get into normal mode.

Power Supply: Rosewill Rx850-D-B ATX12V 850w
Motherboard: KN1 Lite (V1.0A) Socket 939
Memory: Kingston KHX3200AK2/2G 2GB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2
(Kit of 2 - 1GB) and Super Talent 1GB DDR-400 d32pb1gj (two sticks)
I now want to create a back up disk/disks to safetly have them to hand should anything go wrong, my problem is usuing empowering technology, ERecovery to be precise I click to make a back up image onto a disk, it asks me to insert either 5 cd's or 1 dvd disk and then i hit next, then everytime this error comes up!
Making BackupDisk1 needs Drive(:)
