Server Questions
I have a question... Do you NEED (ABOSOLUTELY NEED) a static IP address to run a server?
If you get a program or a site that offers a static DNS address to connect to your server will you get a static IP address? What kind of software do you need to make a gaming server? ((All help is welcome))

No u do not abosolutely need a static ip adress to run a server u can use somthing called http://www.no-ip.com that sets it up so if u have a dynamic ip adress it will still run ur server and from there u can purchase a domain or what ever you want to do but if u want a stactic ip either contact ur isp or if u have a router tell me and ill tell u how to do it from there

I don't have a Static IP, but since I never reboot my modem, it never changes.
In the rare event that I must, I have a process running in the background known as "DirectUpdate" that updates my ip address at the ZoneEdit site. Works like a charm.

Skie, your signature always brings a smile to my face. :)
Anyway, I also have a dynamic IP but like DD said, the modem is never rebooted. I'd also like to know how to run DNS as opposed to redirecting methods.

well, if you have a domain name already, you can sign up for an account at http://zoneedit.com and then create DNS servers for your domain that point to your ip.
Then with your registrar, simply set the DNS servers for the domain as the ones that ZoneEdit gives you, and in a couple of days, it should be working like mine. (Link in sig, if you want to see how well it works.)

There are a few clients out there that are used to update your IP. Dydns.org offers their own special one. I have used the no-ip client before and it has worked well.
How it Works: When you sign up to host your own server and site you put your site domain down and that is stored on a site. The update client is always running in the background so when you reconnect or reboot the update client updates your "new" IP to the one that is already registered under the domain. So .... the "old" IP that is signed up with the domain gets updated to the "new" one. That's basically it. Still Confused ? Then So Am I .....

I used to use:
DynDNS Great Service. Easy Setup and No Problems. Their update client is easy on the resources and great small app that is minimized to the tray.

There is a universal update client that works with a lot of Dynamic DNS sites, and I don't think DYNDNS supports using your own domain name for free, whereas zoneedit does.

Actually, I am not too sure on that. I will have to reasearch into the actual workings of that site. I just know that one have been given a lot of attention for Windows users.

Thank you all. You've been a lot of help! However, I still have no data on running a game server at all... I dearly hope I am not imposing on you... Thanks for your help all.

Right, usually there's an executable in the main folder (server.exe or something) that will run a server.
Then using the tips below, you can give out your domain or subdomain to your friends to connect to, and they can play with you.
