Confounded by Apache

Can someone please save me here? lol

I feel stupid for asking this.

Okay...I downloaded and installed Apache 2.2.8 via the .msi installer package. Then I successfully installed it on my Windows 98SE machine with no errors or anything at all.

The server is supposed to automatically run when installed in a console window...and it's status (running or not) displayed via the little monitoring service icon in the system tray. Well the server is not running (or the icon says it isn't).

I try to select to start Apache through the monitoring service...but no instances of Apache are listed and the "Start" button (along with "Restart") is greyed out.

When I go to Start > Programs > Apache 2.2.8 > Control Apache > Start In Console it opens a console window...but the icon still says that Apache is not running! I have NO idea how to do the following command:

httpd -k start

I can't type anything in the console window even though there is a blinking cursor there. I cannot start it via the monitoring service. I opened the browser window and typed in http://localhost/ and it does work. So what is going on? What am I supposed to do and how do I type the commands like "httpd -k start" into the console box when I can't type anything at all in there? Please help!
