I received a message on one of my other mail servers the other day. I have a client who regularly posts on a Canadian forum where they voice their opinions. The website is regularly hacked by several junkies, and they post as anonymous, leaving only quick posts.
The client wants to know if there is any way to track these people down, which I thought initially "no". However I know nothing about securing forums, and the best I can think of is disabling anonymous users and making it so that they must register in order to post a topic or respond to a thread...many forums I know do that. Or as I was reading on a search that I ran, it is possible to set a server password so that only registered users would know? But then again, these are hackers, which sound like they might not be very elite, only hacking forums to the knowledge of mine and the clients... Any thoughts? I figure unless we have a strong government programmer here that there is no way to track them down, but to stop them from hacking the forums? Thanks guys, any help appreciated. --Shadow--

Re: Need some help from fellow techs...
Are you using an open source forum? If you are then please update it or you can set your forum to only registered member can post on your forum. Also as an administrator of the forum you can check the IP address of the person who post on your forum. Just tell us whats the name of the forum software you're using.

Re: Need some help from fellow techs...
I'm not sure, I'm not the administrator. My client is just someone who posts on the board.
I am not sure if the forum is set to open source, but I do think that if the hackers have the frame of the forum down, they can just hack over the registration ?

Re: Need some help from fellow techs...
new generation of hackers today that they will inject iFrame on your forum and then from that they can post unwanted post on your forum. It's just like your forum site has a honeypot for hackers. Mostly forum owner nowadays use opensource like phpBB, vBulletin etc.
