Help!

Our ski team has asked me to set up a website. I have set up websites when I was in college using front page and my student folder.

I want to know if I'm going to get over my head with this. It is a basic idea with a welcome page, history, events, contact, photos, and videos pages. Some company wants $500 to set this up! I told them that I would give it a go. The President of our club will be buying the domain, what is my next step then? (I have a minor in Comp Sci, if that helps ?)

Total newb here sorry,

Re: Help!

Best bet is to try using a template suited the the sport you want to do, then you can make minor changes to that layout to suit your needs.

Re: Help!

I understand to use an appropriate template.

I guess my problem is this....

I don't know how to even start it. Let say the site was blah.com.......I have an awesome welcome page in FrontPage on my screen. How do I put it on blah.com?

In college I had a folder named inetpub which had my index.html page. In my inetpub folder I had subfolders like 'papers'. So a link could have been.....http://www.uwsp.edu/11173482/inetpub...termpaper.html

I really understood what I did at college since it was just folders. I don't know how I would build a site from scratch. Would I have to make my own folders in the domain?

Could someone make an itemized list?

1. buy domain

2. make welcome page

3. publish welcome page to domain <---????

4. how to make other pages in domain <----????

Thanks for all the help! If you ever need a water ski lesson let me know

Re: Help!

Well, you will need to find a host, there are many free hosts and paid hosting services available. Then you will upload your webpage to that hosts servers via FTP and then you will be able to configure your domain to the site.

To be honest, wait till you have a site up and running before you buy a domain. Its pointless buying a domain and wasting a month or 2 while you wait for your site to be finalized.

Re: Help!

Thanks Carsey!

What do you reccomend for a hosting site (cost, easy to use)? I did some reading and it sounds like Yahoo! might be OK. Can I use frontpage, or do I have to use their site builder?

I don't think my ski team realized that there would be a monthly cost to this....yikes. I think they were going to delegate $500 to start it, but failed to realize that it takes money to keep it up and running.

Our website will be VERY basic. Welcome, pics, videos, abous us, contact, ......, that's pretty much it. So I will take your reccomendation to our board of directors to get the ball rolling on this.

Thanks for your quick and insightful responses they are much appreciated.

Re: Help!

Well, you dont really have to pay per month. There are many free hosts that are very good.

Since you wont have that large of a site, you could possibly get away with 50mb webspace.

Its best to have Cpanel when looking for a host as it is VERY EASY to use and get used to after a while.

This company is alright and Ive been with them before and they were good to me:

Re: Help!

That site puts it's own name into your site's name which wouldn't work with ShawanoSkiSharks.com , which is the domain name the board of directors has already bought.

Now that I have been doing more research....

1. The members of the club could have email through the site

2. We could have movies and pics (need more storage)

Is Yahoo! not the way to go for this basic set up? What about freewebs?

Thanks,

pfan

Re: Help!

Personally, i have no experience with yahoo but freewebs is VERY basic and possibly you wouldnt be able to get your email script to work on it.

As for the site putting their domain in....Once you register your domain to the site you use that domain only. The xyz.x10hosting.com is a sub domain for those people who havent a full domain like you have.

There would be no problems with the domain and the host I provided.
