Download/upload

I use my home PC to update my website and FTP it

Can I download my site to a laptop and then update it on the laptop and upload it

Yes you should be able to do it this way. Also best to keep a offline backup.

Even though I host from my home I do my editing from a variety of locations. As Carsey mentioned it's always good to have an off-line version of the site as well.
