Good Places To Get Started?

While I considor myself somewhat computer-saavy, I really don't know anything about building websites.

Any recomendations or advice for web-building beginners?

In terms of programs and languages and such: What's worth learning? What's popular/unpopular? What's on it's way in? What's on it's way out?

It's a good time to get into web-design... tables and frames are on their way out, and you're on the way in

Some good things to know are html (or even better, xhtml), css, and javascript for basic side scripting. If you want to head into stuff like php, asp, databases etc, theres some knowledgable people around here for that... and I'm not one of them. If you don't want to to all the coding yourself, some of the less awful WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get [on a good day]) programs are Macromedia Dreamweaver (for a price) or NVU (free). If you want to actually find a non-freelance fulltime job doing web design, Flash is a huge plus. Alot of employers want their designer to know Flash, even if they don't know why they need it. As Graphic Design goes, Photoshop is a nice program to have, even though you can get away with a freebie like The GIMP. If you want alot of illustrative control over your images, a program that works in a vector environment like Adobe Illustrator will help.
This is just a start, I'm sure the web guys will be jumping on this soon with some good info.
