detection of image settings in browser
Does anyone know of a way I can have a simple html based webpage detect if a user's browser has images turned off ? (in which case I would direct them to a text based version of the site).

Not really, that information isn't sent as part of the http request like other data is.
You can simply design your site in such a way that it appears to be text based, using the alt attribute for images, for people who have images turned off. Or you can link to a second page from your main page with a link that asks "Are you browsing this site with images off? Click here for text only version" Or something similar like that.

okay - I was heading towards a primarily image based site, but I've experienced display problems so many times in the past with this type that I'm redoing it. Thanks for the info - it will def help for future reference.
