compability problems with opera

ok, this is a whole new subject, so i am starting a whole new thread.

i am including pics, but here's my description of the problem...

i tested my page in 7 different browsers, and opera can't seem to load it correctly. the navbar is smashed, and the text sizes are all wrong.

is there something specific that is wrong with opera, or is it my code being "non-standard"?

the first pic is opera, and the second is firefox.

Kiomi, I think you'll realise something here. Sorry for this taking you that long but I think you'll find our two resident experts (DD & Skie) in this area are not around as much.

Whether they are on holiday or spending time with family, I do not know but I'm sure they'll be in soon.

Try posting the code, so we can have a try at working it out

As for your question

thank you.

i wasn't trying to seem impatient, i was just trying to bump it now and then.

anyhow, here is the problematic code....
Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

 </head>
<body bgcolor="#000000">

If this is your first time here, or if you have not been here in a while,
then you might be wondering what sort of page this is, you might even be wondering what happened to
all the content. This page is a collective resource for players of the game <a href="http://www.darkages.com/" target="New"><font color="RED"><I>"DarkAges, Legends of Temuair"</I></font></a>, and is connected and hosted by a major tech support forum.

Where's the content?
you ask. Due to a loss of data during a transfer, this site went down,and is currently in the process

only the part that sets up the navbar frame is a problem here, and only with opera...

i think it's right here

This might be a question to ask in the Client Side Languages forum. The Web Serving and Management forum is more for server administration. I'll go ahead and move this thread for you.

and i guess to round off the question i am asking, is how do i manage to make a frame for my navbar, that opera will display correctly?

Your problem may lie in the iframe that's housing the nav.html file. I think older versions of Opera have rejected iframes - something to consider.

also, iframes are subject to the same problems as regular frames - people can be linked (via search engines) directly to the iframe content:

ok, I think this is a problem with the difference in how the two browsers render frames.

Here's what you can try...

Code:
<table>
 <tr>
  <td align="left" valign="top" width="146" height="100%">
   <iframe name="cwindow" width="100%" height="100%" src="nav.html"></iframe>
  </td>
  <td>
in your <td> tag, you have the width=146... try adding the height attribute and experimenting around for good values.

If you want it to grow larger and smaller gracefully as the text size changes, you'll need to use CSS, but setting the frame height as a fixed value should fix the problem.

An even better fix may be to simply add a tag that changes this one for Opera, ie, setting the specific height under opera, and leaving it as it is for other browsers, if you are worried about that sort of thing.

Sorry for taking so long kiomi, I forgot this thread was even here :-(

Also, another pointer, I notice that you Sometimes Talk With Every Word Capitalized. This may not be a problem for some, but for me, its really annoying, and it may be for others. Something to keep in mind as you add content.

Also done, and you weren't the only person, more than 10 people said it.

Also, i rebuilt my navbar to work as a fully graphic bar, i think it's alot nicer. The entire site was re-worked, and i made tons of formatting corrections, and lots of other small fixes, as well as rebuilding certain parts completely. Feel free to take a look, and let me know if you see any problems with it now. But, thank you for the help, i seriously appreciate it. Oh, i forgot to include the link :p http://www.techsupportforum.com/dasupport

Everything looks good.

I dig the new menu, it looks cool.

(I vaguely remember posting this somewhere else too, but I dunno....)

the new menu is made from slices of the in game menus, i did that to stick to the overall theme.

honestly, it's better than i thought i would do, seeing how i am an html novice and all.

thank you for the positive feedback, it feels good to know that i wasn't just fooling myself into thinking it looked good.

there's still tons of small things to fix, but i'm learning! :)
