Cannot view Website

Hi,

I'm kind of new to this hosting website thing. I'm using dynamic cable modem with a linksys router that has port 80 forwarded to my computer. I've also opened up port 80 on my computer but I'm still not able to view my website from outside. I can type in the ip address locally and view the website. I'm running Windows XP Pro with IIS 5.1. Is there anything else I'm missing? Thanks

Routers are a pain with web surfing. If you have just one PC you can disable NAT on the router, thus the PC has a public IP and it should work. If you have more than one PC you may need to set it up like I did for my webserver.

Cable Modem >>> Server PC Running Internet Connection Sharing >>> Internet Out (Crossover Cable) >>> Router >>> Client PCs

If you have questions about internet connection sharing you can Google it.

There's no way of doing this with port forwarding on the router?

If you have the port forwarded and people from the outside still cant ssee your site then maybe your isp blocks incoming on port 80. Alot of them seem to do this and so does mine. To test if this is the case run your webserver on something like port 82 , forward port 82, then connect to http://externalip:82

and if people can see that then you know your isp blocks it. Also you can google like

"your isp",blocked ports

I did that for mine (cox cable) and got a big list of all the blocked ports.

It turns out my ISP was blocking port 80 so I changed the port number to 82 and it works now. Just another question. When I change to port 82, do I have to enter the ":82" after my domain name every time I want to access the website? Is there a way to not have to enter the :82? Thanks.

if you arent running dns or dont have control of the dns then yes.

if you do then you can just ahve your domain name point to yourip:82 and then you wont have to.
