I need some help understanding...
Here's the deal. I'm pretty new at the whole website building thing. I can get around pretty good in Dreamweaver and also in Microsoft Frontpage. What I'm still having problems understanding is the process after the page is built. Getting it moved over to the web site name, host servers and everything that happens after the site has been built. I know this is an amature question, but any answers will be great.
Thank you. |

Hi btech,
Well glad to hear that you seems to be building your own site. Alright, basically once you have create your pages in (*.htm or *.html) using microsoft frontpage or dreamweaver, you need to upload to somewhere. Basically there are alot of free webhosting available, such as angelfire, geocities. . Advantages are that they are free, disadvantages are that they have limited space and when alot of users try to view yur website, they might have traffic. As for free webhosting, they provide you with transfer manager whereby u can upload your html file using IE. On the other hand, u can apply your own domain whereby u get something like.com or .org, and they offer more webhost space. Advantage : own domain, user preference on webhost space. Disadvantage: Cost. As for own domain, you can upload your file using ftp such as CuteFtp or WS_Ftp.. I hope that helps alittle. :) |

Yeah, there are many free hosts available, and also some good paid ones. What you want to look for is a host that supports FTP.
Once you create an account with a host that supports FTP, you will want to log into their FTP server by typing the FTP address IN INTERNET EXPLORER. You do so like this: ftp://upload.mywebhost.com (Or whaever address you are given for FTP) Once you do that, a login box should appear. If it does not, right click and choose "Login As". Enter in the username and password for your hosting account. Once that is done, the server will log you in. You can now transfer over your files to the server via simple copy and paste. Paste the files into the FTP window. Make sure one file is named "index.htm" or "index.html". This is important as the server makes this the first page your visitors see when they type in your web address. Once that is done and all files are transferred (HTM, HTML, any images and media files required for the site) go to your assigned web address (Usually like www.mywebhost.com/you) and then the site should appear! To find a good free web host with FTP look HERE! Hope it helps, BMR777
