XP Server

I want to turn my Windows XP machine into a web server using Apache and Filezilla. (If you have better choices let me know.) I need to know how to not only get past my router and onto the internet but I also need to know what sort of settings I need to allow inside XP. So far all I've been able to do is open up the firewall ports for the programs, but it doesn't work.

Also I don't have a domain name yet. I'm fairly sure I can just use my IP as a URL. I'm just screwing around here and not worried about securtiy. But in the process of this thread I'd like to know how, once I've bought one, to set up the domain name. I don't have one cause I don't have the cash. I doubt there are free DNS services but if you know of one just tip me off.

go to dyndns.org Their service is free and works with Dynamic IP addresses. I have been using it for about 4 months now and hosting my own ftp and web sites with no problem.

Yep dyndns.org is a good service...I have one up using them to at http://elf.kicks-a**.org used ip because site filters out address name.

Make sure you forward port 80 to your computer from the router. Make sure the ports are open through any firewall you are using (zonealarm or otherwise). You will have to edit your httpd.conf file some to get it all set up correctly. Then make sure your apache service is started and see if you can load up the site. If it doesn't load try loading http://127.0.0.1 and see if the apache server is working correctly.

Well I have Apache up and running fine
http://localhost displays the default page

But I can't get through the router
I've forewarded all the ports but all I get from the URL is an error.

I've also added my new URL everywhere I'm supposed to on the router

Also my IP doesn't load up the site either

Do you have a url? have you tried using your ip? Also make sure you are forwarding port 80 through your router to your computer (e.g. to your local ip 192.168.xxx.xxx)

Just adding a note

that if you have setup your Dynamic DNS and your webserver works when you browse to http://localhost .

If you are trying to connect from INside you own network to your own external IP/DNS name this WILL NOT work.. Try it externaly all you need is port 80 TCP fowarded from router/firewall to the webserver..

I wholely disagree...I can connect to my own computer through my external ip, and I can also connect to my other webserver on the external ip. If you can't connect to it from your computer chances are no one else can either. If you like you can post the domain here and we will tell you if it's up.

The domain I got is http://aeuzent.kicks-***.net

I do have the port forwarded to this machine's IP and I have the DynamicDNS set up, as far as I know

Some packages of Apache are distributed with Localhost (and 127.0.0.1 of course) being the only addresses captured by the apache service. You have to alter the .conf file (the name evades me at the moment and I no longer have Apache on here) for it to accept external connections like the router. Hopefully someone else here is familiar with the main configuration file and can confirm/counter/expand this suggestion.

I don't think you even have the address set up correctly...I can't ping it. You've got it registered, make sure your have a client to update your dynamic ip. As it changes the dyndns.org servers need to get an updated ip. They have clients available that will automatically update it for you available HERE

I have downloaded and installed that program and after a quick check through the apache conf file I see no refrences to the localhost, nor it's ip counter part.
When I set up this version it gave me an option to add in the domain name.

I'm still confused as hell here, just tell me what to do.

To get the apache http server running, you have to make 3 changes to the httpd.conf file - by default located under Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\conf\

Use notepad to open it, and make the following changes:

Under ###Section 2: 'Main' server configuration

1. write your url after:

Servername[space]

2. the local address of your website (.e.g. c:\website\) after

Documentroot[space]

3. in "quotes" and within the <> write your local adress again

<directory "">

you'll have to do a fair amount of scrolling but they are all there on their seperate lines... I believe this is all I modified to get apache running - however I've moved onto IIS now so forgive me if I missed something.

Well Apache was running, however this was nice cause I got to define my root folder

ELF When u are connecting to your own pc are you sitting at it ???
is your gateway to the real world that same IP your connecting too??

My default gateway is 192.168.0.1, I am 192.168.0.131...I was connecting to 69.138.xxx.xxx(my external ip - or elf.kicks-a**.org which is my domain). The website is hosted off me (e.g. 192.168.0.131 or 127.0.0.1 or localhost)
