Transfer of website

Hi

I currently maintain a website which has been passed over to me recently.

Its edited on the most ancient editor Adobe Pagemill 3.0. The pages are built up here and uploaded to the server.

Now, while I have gotten used to using this programme it is obviously not the best position to be in and I really would like to transfer to another programme but have no idea where to start.

I hope someone is able to help!

Thanks.

Re: Transfer of website

Well it depends what program you would like to use.

For example Dreamweaver or a free one such as Kompozer

Have you tried opening the html files in another program yet?
I would start there & see how they look.

You might want to save them somewhere else after to see if the formatting changes.

If there aren't many pages, it might be easier to start again from scratch if you experience problems.

Another thing to bear in mind, does it connect to any database/other programs online. This would need more work.

If its a simple website you should be ok.

Re: Transfer of website

Thanks for your reply.

I have no clue what program to use.

What do you mean another file, as in another website design program?

It connects to the host site - velnet.

In this case , what would you suggest my next step would be? Do the free programs work as well as some bought ones etc?

Sorry - I really am an amataur when it comes to this!

Re: Transfer of website

I really really recommend you learn HTML if you are going to be keeping up this site. In which case you have a myriad of good options to edit the site, anywhere from the simple notepad program already installed on your computer to a fancier text editor like notepad++ which you can download free. If you have the money, Dreamweaver does an A+ job as far as editors go. I typically stay on the code side of it, then the design view to check out my code periodically for obvious problems rather than refreshing the browser constantly. If your HTML is shaky, you can, of course use design view to do the whole site, but its easy to run into problems (as with any WYSIWYG editor).

The standard starting point for learning HTML is http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

HTML is a really easy language to get started with and it feels great to have hand coded your very own site.

Good luck

Re: Transfer of website

What is Kompozer like?

I have tried the trial of Dreamweaver and really do like it, but money will be an issue - as it is for a voluntary organisation...

Re: Transfer of website

Notepad!!!! It's more rewarding. If you use a mac then download something else and please don't use the installed app to code. The formatting options for the text are absolutely horrible and it makes you go blind lol.

I personally love gedit.

Eh, I've never been much of a visual thinker so it works for me. I wish I could show you some of my work, but I don't pay for web hosting. Even have a coffee mug. ahmorrow doesn't pay for web hosting. I'll post an image if you want... maybe. If I feel good and my camera is working... lol.

You know about http://x10hosting.com/ ? I haven't used them in a while, but it's free hosting. Poor, but still free.

Re: Transfer of website

Lol, thats what I get for not looking around. I'll send you a link once I get something up and running Fred. Thanks :-)

Only reason I haven't been using any other I've found is because it doesn't support PHP without being a paid subscriber :-( but that one does!
