Re: website promgramming help?

Hey, all i can advise you is to go here: www.w3schools.com and learn to code in HTML&CSS.

And also that it's not worth doing(The site idea itself, not the learning to code[that's very worth doing]), this idea has been done to death and there are various market leaders.

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: website promgramming help?

Yeah there's really nothing in it for a programmer (like myself) to basically make another dating website - especially for free (that is a ton of work to do it the right way). You'll need a unique take on the whole thing...what makes it unique?

Re: website promgramming help?

Exactly, what's your Unique Selling Point? To be honest most USPs have been done to death in that market. And i doubt anyone is going to really help you out here, because creating a website that may one day take revenue(or would have done if you were a year or four quicker to the mark) for free just doesn't happen.

Re: website promgramming help?

I do think there are some unique ways to attract a market - I really do. I don't think doing it the way Match and eHarmony have done it is the way though. You're going to have to figure out a way to be different. I have a few ideas - but I've thought about making a dating site myself (not traditional at all, though - most of the focus would be setting up columns for dating experts I am friends with, and a minor focus in the future on dating profiles if I felt that fit in the model) so I'm not real keen on giving those away :P It's a lot to ask of someone when you want them to basically build all of the functionality of such a site - I just doubt that you fully understand the skill set that goes into that, and how much it would cost if you looked at a job survey for this type of professional. It would easily be $10k with most firms...and that's a pretty conservative figure.

Re: website promgramming help?

Not many people will ever help you set up such a site. Just got to learn as much as you can and that takes lots of time. The likes of match and eharmony are only popular because they spend millions on marketing and appeal to a certain audience. As guys have said, the market is flooded with dating sites.
I think, that you would be best of, hiring a professional design team to do this for you. The amount of work , time and coding that would go into such a project, would be insane.

Re: website promgramming help?

Good luck with that. But i suggest you think into this, unless it was a family member i was doing this for i would never charge as little as 50€(i probably wouldn't charge with family either)...

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: website promgramming help?

Cool that you found somebody. A few things, That might become an issue though. I do not know what contract you guys will have, but Pretty much, will the developer own the code and all that goes into the site?. If you make it big, would they try and sue you, citing that they own the code?. Money brings out the worse in most people. I think a full, legal binding contract should be in use here.

Re: website promgramming help?

^ Especially when they're putting so much time into such a thing for only $70. I know I would. Just thinking about the huge amount of work that goes into that: member pages, member searches, member listings, member preferences, login system, email system, matching algorithm, ad system, membership tiers/payment options (if you wanted such a thing), personality tests (could get very complicated when you throw in an advanced matching algorithm)...I'm probably forgetting quite a few things, but it's all very complicated. I have the experience and code library to know that it's a LOT of work. Hundreds if not thousands of hours, depending on the experience of the programmer. I wouldn't even do the database design for $70. It's a very advanced project to undertake...especially when you do it the right way.

Re: website promgramming help?

Well, I can tell you that either you or the person you are hiring is going to get ripped off. My guess is that you'll be out 50€ with nothing to show. I'm betting the person who you are hiring really doesn't know what they are doing, because if they were a sensible professional web developer with actual skills, they would not be charging that little. I think that even redcore's $10k estimate is very low.

I realize that your idea has really been bashed on here, but with good reason. Please take our advice and try something else instead. Maybe make a static site with dating advice or something rather than a dynamic one.

Be sure to stop by some day and tell us how it went ;-)

Re: website promgramming help?

Great, W3Schools are by far the most respected free web tutorials on the internet, they're where i learned, they're where most started, and they're absolutely amazing.

I personally like ripping apart other websites and learning that way. Right click--view source. Just be sure not to use their code in yours... they sue and well... they sue for a lot.
