Re: web page creation

First of all, I would recommend installing a good text editor. You can use Notepad or Simpletext to start out, but if you're serious I would recommend something with more features. Notepad++ has syntax highlighting for many languages, macros, links to compilers and interpreters (including web browsers), FTP support, and more of these useful features. You can find a safe download for Notepad++ in my signature block.

Now for the web browser. Any web browser will do a fairly decent job.

Now, for the XHTML 4.0* and CSS Level 2.1*. You may have heard of XHTML (or its predecessor HTML), but you may not have seen CSS before. They are both quite easy to work with, the only troube is remembering some of the more complex parts.

* soon to be succeeded by XHTML 5 and CSS Level 3 respectively

XHTML 4.0

XHTML [eXtensible HyperText Markup Language] is functionally identical to HTML [HyperText Markup Language] (they both format text as prescribed). XHTML is based on HTML, but uses the syntax of XML. XML is a whole different language that we don't need to get into at this time.

Now, let's start with good practice. If you use these good practices when developing your site, you will get more hits, and rank higher in the seach engines.

Each page must start with:
HTML Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />
Now that we have that out of the way, let's create your first web page.

Create a New Text Document from the right-click menu on your Desktop. Rename the document index.html. The icon should change to that of your default browser or "unknown file type"; if it does not change then you didn't rename the file properly.

Copy and Paste the above XHTML block into the very top of your document.

Copy and Paste this into your document:
HTML Code:
<title>First Web Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<h3 style="text-align: center; color: red">Your First Web Page</h3>
<p>This is my first web page. Look around if you like, though there isn't much to see right now.</p>
<p>Text within <pre><p></pre> displays as text.</p>
<!--This is a comment. All text within comments is not displayed-->
</body>
</html>
Save this file. You have just created a new web page! You can view the page in any web browser.

Now, instead of me telling you what each thing does and risk boring you to death, I will refer you to my good friend W3Schools [ http://www.w3schools.com/ ], which explains everything much better than I.

Now, to get your wonderful creation on the Web, you will need a domain, a host, and a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client. Filezilla is free, safe, and popular [ http://filezilla-project.org/ ]. Using the FTP client and the details provided by your host, you can quickly and easily put your site on the Internet for everyone to see.
