With front page 98, how does the personal web server start?

Frontpage does not have a webserver on it. It simply creates the HTML file that you would upload to your webserver.

If you want a webserver, you will need a program like apache.

Microsoft used to have its own personal websever for win98. I think I might have it on CD somewhere. I will try and search this weekend for it. If you wish PM me to remind me. You can search microsoftwas website for it. It was called PWS I believe. It didn't run ASP, but you could test out HTML pages through it.

Dan,

It was working well and it was nice to be able to work off line from the site, I installed norton and after that everything went south, I was able to restore everything but the PWS stopped working, and i have little or no info on it, also the nice feature was you could always have your files on the explore page for access.
Thank you for the reply,
Ron

Same happened to me after installing NA 2005, what happened to PWS4 was it would not recognize my computer name. All my pages were not found until I changed my syntax from http://<computer name>/index.html to http://hostname/index.html.

I don't use frontpage, instead I use 1st page. You can download it free, and is a full blown version with every feature, completely unrestricted. Robust too, never fails and everything works. If you do change to 1st Page you will have to reinstall PWS4, and this time in setup make sure frontpage extensions is not checked.

Read the article concerning MSTSETUP.dll, you will have to download that seperatley. I have it and I can send it to you if you want.

Any problem with PWS4, or for everything you need to install you can get help from www.dewassoc.com/support

Have you tried uninstalling Norton? Most likely you have a setting in Norton or your firewall (if you have one installed) that is blocking PWS and your HTTP port (80). You will then need to configure Norton to allow for traffic through that port. Also, if you're on a server edition of Windows, I recommend IIS.
*Reminder*- You cannot run IIS, PWS, or Apache together. Only one service may be running at a time.
