Make my own web server...

Hi,

A while ago I started a thread asking about web hosts and how many MySQL databases I might need from that host. I thought I was all set when all of a sudden I came up with a crazy new idea.

What if I made my very own server... right in the convenience of my home?

I figured I may as well put one of the ol' computers in my basement to use and install Apache on it! Connect it to the internet and it is like having a dedicated hosting plan... FREE! No limitations... (besides disk space and stuff... you know, but databases and all that... as many as I want).

I Googled and found a bunch of tutorials on how to do it, so I know it is possible.

When something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Is this the case here? What are the fatal flaws in my plan?

Re: Make my own web server...

before you setup your own server, you need to read the terms of use for your internet connection. most isps do not allow it unless you purchase a business account. If they find you violating their policy, they will cut your internet off.

One other thing about a home server, it can be very slow and you will not be able to handle that many connections.

Re: Make my own web server...

Most of the time home servers are slower - especially when you get a lot of traffic. Good hosting companies are set up in data centers (typically located along major backbones within most large cities, like Chicago, Sacramento, New York City, etc)

I personally use a hosting company - but I know a lot of developers who use their own servers at home. They are on high-grade ISP connections though.
