Re: New to websites

Hi, so your new to websites?

I recommend that the first language you learn is HTML, look it up in Google. Websites aren't made by putting the pictures in the right places like images - completely different.

Re: New to websites

Easily help you with HTML?

I always reccomend www.w3schools.com take a look at it, their tutorials on HTML, CSS and Javascript are the best and will guide you through writing websites...

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: New to websites

From your home page, which should be called index.htm or index.html, you should set up links to any other pages you want in the site. For example, set up a link to Contact Us, and call that page contactus.htm. Then create the contactus.htm page and upload it into the same directory as your index.htm file. It's also a good thing to add a link back to your home page to any other page you create, so that a visitor doesn't end up on a page like your Contact Page with no way to get back to your home page.

Re: New to websites

I think the best way to learn a programming language of any sort is to sit down and teach yourself. The internet is a great resource for getting help (GOOGLE, LITERALLY TYPE IN YOUR QUESTION!!!)

I cant stress enough how useful google can be.

There are tutorials and lessons on html (along with all other languages) and in alot of ways they can help you. But if you want to both speed up your understanding and knowledge of the language, find a site you like. Open its source code. Copy it, and modify different parts. Have fun with it, see what different things do. Use the tutorials as guides, dont solely rely on them to each you everything.

and GOOGLE!!! The good thing about the internet is, if you have a question about something, chances are someone's already asked it and found an answer :)

It looks like your using a template. If you have questions regarding layout, find a successful website and "borrow" their ideas (and maybe their code too).

Good luck, its looking great!

As the above said, the main page of the website is generally index.html
If you want a contact section, name it something creative like contact.html (or .htm)

Alot of sites use the same style of page for different areas of the site, so you could basically make a copy of your index file, name it contact. Modify some small parts of it and link it to the main page.

to all of you, thanks for this. Not to threadjack, but im looking to learn about alot of things included web design. I recently spent time researching bit torrent and after crawling through the language i found that it is not as complicated as it seems. I also recently learner about proxy servers and privacy and anonymity which is important to me. I had no idea how vulnerable we all are. This made me decide that i want to learn computers inside out, or at least to have a good grasp on things. Ive found that unless you have a good friend to sit down and teach you everything it is best to do it yourself. It seems all you have to do is be able to read and be willing to do it, the info is all there for you. Any other info you folks have regarding how to get in the loop and up to speed? Do you people refer to each area of interest as its own language? I want to be a computer nerd, so im trying to learn whats up. Should i ditch my Vista and switch to linux? sorry for the threadjack. TSF is awesome, thanks in advance.

Re: New to websites

Hey Lend-Fish, dont ditch vista to switch to linux before having tried it, get your hands on a copy of knoppix (download it and burn it to disk), it's a live disk/PE disk/operating system that runs off a cd(or memory stick for that matter)...

Link here:
http://www.knoppix.org/
(it may appear in an alternate language, just click the buttons at the top of the page)

If you like it then by all means ditch and run, i use knoppix rather than installing linux on my laptop because i need windows to run various school programs etc... (and for testing webpages with an IE renderer)

As for what you want to learn, computers are such a vast topic that you have to start with something and stick to it before trying something else... I currently have a list of 14 different (quite big) subjects i'm learning... What sort of thing are you interested in, personally i started with web-design and moved into general programming then computing concepts in general and am now hovering through different programming languages and some design programs... If you give us an idea of what you're interested in i can point you in the direction of some stuff to get you started...

Also, what level of experience do you have? how long have you been using computers? and what have you looked at so far? (also just for curiosity's sake how old are you?)

"... each area of interest as its own language?" i'm not completely sure what you're asking here but i believe you're on about programming/scripting languages... In that case there are tonnes which have different purposes, etc.

Anyway, give us an idea of what you want to learn (design/programming/security analysing/and so on and so forth) and we'll help you out...

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: New to websites

Jamey,
thanks for the cool post. im between 31-37 years of age and im paranoid about security. My level of experience and comfort? Well, let see, been using a computer since about 96. Im very comfortable with things i know and easily confused by things that are foreign to me, so i guess im like everyone else. Average intelligence, college degree, mortgage and RE licensed, above average learner, thinker. I think in such a way that very basic stuff throws me off because im so descriptive that vagueness confuses me. Use computers for email, message forums, mortgage loan applications, photos, you tube and made a couple videos to put up, online banking, skype, bittorrent, itunes.

Subjects i want to learn, security in more detail, privacy, web design, web hosting, servers, graphic design, would love to make art and create vinyl stickers and other forms of art i can sell and just have fun with. Recently learned bit torrent (wow). want to have broad understanding of computers. When geeks talk, i want to know what they are saying. I never want to have anyone else work on my computer, and dont want to pay someone who knows just a little more than me to diagnose my problems when they really arent sure either. Im sure there is a ton more i want to learn that i dont even know exists yet. Does this make sense? Yeah, i know, im a little nuts.

thanks, cheers, looking ---> to your reply.
