Is FTP safe? If so what do you recommend?

not sure what you mean, are you talking about installing ftp for others to access your files or using it to upload/download files or installing ftp software?

its safe. If you use firefox, it has a fireftp extension that works great. If you want a standalone ftp then give smartftp a try. Its free for home use.

I use FileZilla. It's great...a bit confusing when you first look at the GUI - but once you take a second to realize what you're looking at, it's easy.

Smart FTP gets my vote... check it out, simple and easy to use, and a small install.
