can anyone give me a step by step guide to getting a website online....eg getting web hosting, domain names, ftp, and any costs? etc.

There are a lot of great resources out there. Let me give you a couple of links to start with. Redcore has a good article here about starting a website. Sitepoint has some great articles to read. Although there is no 1-10 step process a lot of information for the picking. They do go beyond the simple website setup. A search on Google brought up some other articles on setting up a website. I have only scanned over these links to make sure they have information relevant to your request. The Beginner's A-Z Guide How To Start A WebsiteQuestion for you. What is the website intended for? That can help us guide you in a direction. There are a lot of different hosting companies offering a billion options ranging from $5 - $100+ a month depending on your needs. The hosting companies that I do business with are: Webhostingbuzz IpowerThey both have been reliable. You will find everyone has there own opinion on what hosting company is the best. This is just mine.  Good luck and don't hesitate to ask more questions.
